Beer? I'm a lager monkey at heart so these Ales you're talking about scare me. Corona's just a summer barbecue beer for me, I wouldn't drink it recreationally if I could help it. I'll choose a nice cold Pilsner and maybe drink craft beer once in a blue moon, sticking to the light and slightly fruity drinks and staying away from the dark pungent concoctions.

@aslag That would probably be Camp Bolis. I did field training there too for ABGD. I was Security Specialist in the AF.
I hated Texas, especially the freaking cockroaches and the heat. Only thing I liked was the rain and lightning storms.

Morning everyone. Fresh coffee is ready. Cinnamon sprinkled Mallo bars and plain Mallo bars are on the counter.

I live north of the U.S. near a large metropolitan city. I love movies and collect them. Old, new and of various genres. My love of computer 3D images started with the release of the 1982 film 'Tron ' and the 1984 film 'The Last Starfighter'. Just dated myself.

I've dabbled with various 3D programs over the years including 3DS MAX, Cinema 4D, and Blender. Then a few months ago I discovered DAZ3D. Found out that I do not want to model characters, building, etc. I do like building scenes in DAZ though. Taking the assets and making images, fine tuning it and if all goes well being happy with the results.

I'm learning new things with every project and I'm looking forward to what I will learn next. Having lots of fun.

Hmmmm, it looks like the graphics card in my good computer just died. It was rendering and had turned off the monitors while it worked. When I hit the spacebar to wake it up, the primary display came up for a second then went blank. I turned on the secondary monitor and everything had moved there. A cursory inspection/troubleshooting shows that the primary monitor output is dead(?) and the computer doesn't see it. A quick check online for cards at my local shops (BestBuy.ca and my local Mom-n-Pop shop) shows that they have no stock on hand because the Bitcoin miners have sucked them all up. I'm looking at Amazon, but will do some serious troubleshooting before I declare it dead. It seems odd that one output would just die while the card itself continues to run fine.

Now, now @not-hunter. That's enough. Go sit in the corner. 🙂

It urns out that the card didn't die, just the display port plug. It's a GTX 960 Ti with two display ports, 2 HDMIs and a DVI plug. Both display ports are non-functional but the HDMIs work fine. It could be the display port cable but in my experience, cable wiring doesn't break just sitting there and this cable hadn't moved in years.

While researching a possible replacement, I came across this site...
    https://www.studio1productions.com/Articles/NVidia-GPU-Chart.htm

It could be handy for others looking to replace a card. I was thinking that a 760 seemed to provide the best bang (CUDA Cores) for the money.

960 Ti? you mean a 980 Ti? The 960 Ti was only a rumor in 2015 and never happened.

The 780 Ti is best bang for the money. 2880 Cuda cores over the 760's 1152.
Shame about the low amount of Vram on both cards though, and Iray needs the Vram.

Brand. Anything that offers a good support over 3 years. EVGA seems to come top of the list in that respect.

    Oops...you're correct, it's a 960 with 2Gb of ram.
I just checked Amazon and the 780 Ti is between a grand and 700 bucks Canadian. I'd like to build a new comp next year and it'll be interesting to see what's available. I'm hoping the coin miners will move on to something else and let the prices of video cards come back down.

you know when you avoid making an account at a site to download something for ages because it's yet another account somewhere, eventually bite the bullet and try to sign up only to discover you already had an account you'd forgotten about ?

well that was me just now with sharecg.

anyway hello everyone I am relatively new to this whole 3D thing, although I lurked and downloaded a bunch from KAT. My name is easily Discoverable and I live below the equator in almost the most southern spot you can get without being in Antarctica and still being gmt+2.
I started with the DAZ stuff originally when I couldn't find character art for a DnD character of mine, I then discovered that the stuff I made at the time was even worse 🙂 and sadly I seem to have deleted it since.

@norbertz or anyone else with who would know.

so because it was mentioned.. Figured I'd ask..;-)

I haven't built a computer in over a decade so I'm rusty and out of the loop.

I'm wanting to upgrade my Nvidia card. Any suggestions on what would be a safe upgrade for the time being to get a bit more speed/power and safe for my current system?

    Current system.

    A 780 Ti a grand? Nah, I think you're confusing it with the 10 series cards 🙂
The 780 Ti would be around 150-180 Canadian.

No need to sell a kidney or limb to fund a good GPU, there are plenty good used cards out there. You just have to be certain they haven't been used for mining.

Used, a 980 Ti will suffice. Plenty of CUDA and 6GB of VRAM.
Nvidia sacrificed CUDA for VRAM in the 10 series cards. Seems they want the 3D artists to splash on a Titan.

New card. Hmmm, If you have the money a 1080 with 8GB of VRAM is a good card.
After that the prices go sky high and you may have to sell body parts to fund a 1080 Ti and up.
