"I've not seen any skin that impressed me as being drastically better than 8."
I haven't seen a single G9 one better than previous Genesis, or going back to V4 for that matter.May 13, 2024 at 6:22 am #2074659Don't be silly. V4 had baked in shadows and details that do not work in a render engine like Iray. Many textures were less than 4K in size, and they were badly compressed on top of that small size.
Texture compression is a great evil in this field, and too many PAs compress the crap out of their textures still. But they have got a little better, some of them them at least. When you see textures that are just a couple hundred KB in size, that's not a good sign. When it comes to the important detail maps, you may as well just use a random noise map at that point. When it comes to Genesis 9, a number of PAs have slowly started to ship less compressed textures. They also started using different sources for them, likely through Daz's deal with XYZ Texturing, though that trend started with 8.1. I know it is easy to crap on G9, it is bad, but this is one thing that is not that bad. The detail normal map for G9 is the best normal map I have seen. No other even comes close.
However material settings play a massive role, and this is a problem. The PBR Skin shader that Daz came up with isn't anything special, and many characters have a skin setting that casts a black shadow around the edges of the skin. Why PAs keep doing that, I don't know, but that certainly is not how skin works. It gives G9 characters an outline that makes them stand out a mile from anything else as well as being obvious CGI creations. For all the hype around the new eye, the eye tear prop looks like this milky material instead of, well, a tear, and it is perfectly smooth and unnatural looking. As for the eye textures, you can use the G9 eye textures on 8.1, BTW, with no conversion needed. If you do that, the "advancement" of 9 in the eyes is largely nullified.
Because the advancement was mostly from the texture.Iray is what it is. Most of the other render engines are doing some form of cheat to be faster or look the way they do. But regardless, Iray is just a plug in for Daz. They can use any number of other render engines. Daz still includes a 3DL plugin, and don't forget Filament.
So they can add another render engine, and still keep Iray for compatibility. The same goes for Genesis. Daz can make a new figure that is not Genesis, but still include Genesis just like they include Victoria 4 still to this day.
It wouldn't even make sense to exclude past content, that absolutely would sink the company. Granted the company is sinking, but killing off Iray and or Genesis would capsize the boat mush faster. They need to do something, but not that. All that said, I think Daz 5 is largely vaporware. They have like 1 guy doing the actual programming, and he's not getting younger. DS5 clearly broke a couple years ago, and they have spent all that time trying to make it work. That is a massive red flag. The software will be outdated the day it ships if it ever does because of all these delays. But I think it is just as likely Daz will go out of business before DS5 ships. They might try to get it out the door unfinished at the last minute as a desperation play.

Yup...couldn't agree more. I keep asking in Daz's forums and my question is never posted nor do I get a reply from that sycophant, Haseltine.
Tafi is just out for a quick buck and doesn't give a shit for the long term viability of the company. Everything they've done since taking over has shown that.
I keep bugging Rendo to fix all the long term problems with Poser AND make the next release fully compatible with Daz's duf format. It'll never happen but at least it gives me a reason to keep harassing them.May 14, 2024 at 9:03 am #2074831I would have thought that by now someone would have come up with a scripted G9 to G8 Character Converter, even if it was morphs only.
I get why Daz wouldn't like it, but there are plenty of talented scripters out there.
:0/
May 14, 2024 at 11:08 am #2074848That would be nice, but if someone did put a script out there I bet DAZ would file a DMCA and kill it.
May 14, 2024 at 11:17 am #2074854TBH I don't know the fine print of DMCA legalese, but I doubt it would be valid, if it is a scripter's own work? :0/
May 14, 2024 at 11:49 am #2074859They expect the recipient to know little if anything about Corporate Legalese.
If the store has received the take-down notice there is little the content creator can do in a bid to fight back. I suspect most would just give up 🙁
May 14, 2024 at 12:47 pm #2074863a converter script like that does not violate any rights. Particularly if it is a standalone software. It simply manipulates a file and changes file A into file B.
May 14, 2024 at 2:40 pm #2074874Exactly so.
I do not think they would have any legal right to stop it, as there is no copyright infringement.
🙂
May 15, 2024 at 12:46 pm #2074976I was thinking more along the lines of creating a problem where there isn't one. Daz just want to replace G8 with G9 and see anything that slows their money machine as a threat.
May 15, 2024 at 12:57 pm #2074978Genesis 9, is not a failure by the physical point, but the idea of publish a new figure that the previous clothing wont fit or will be hard to adjust to is not a good idea. Also a lot of military themes clothing look too manly, it doesnt even hug the curves of the character
May 15, 2024 at 1:50 pm #2074982Well, like I said on page one:
' For me a big 'Yes.'
Whilst the clothes are OK with Richard's excellent G9 G8F clone, all the characters suffer from the sub par body attention.
It may be fine if you are only into close up portraits, but the rest is a massive step backwards for what I use characters for.':0/
May 15, 2024 at 3:18 pm #2074990I like G9 as I stated previously (just as eelgoo probably also stated that he disliked it more than 50 times in this thread alone lol). As long as you look at it as purely a blank canvas and are willing to get the morph packs required in order to tune it to your liking it can look just as good as the other generations. Plus, the headache with expressions G8.1 introduced when having to tinker with the files is gone, most hair for G8 that I got besides the OOT ones and a few others looked subpar compared to G9, most products for G9 which are made by older artists have shaped up nicely due to them gaining experience from all the other generations.
All in all, I still think it is a positive even with all the draw backs it has and I am glad it gets more products, however I think it deserves all the criticism it got because of its money hungry incompatibility with the hair and clothes of the former generations.
