    Super excited about this contest! This takes me back to my days as a lowly film student.
    Took the day off work on account of feeling a bit under the weather and worked on this between bowls of soup and naps.

    @Herecles

    So if you ran for President you'd vote for the competition? Im getting a rubber glove and KY out since if i believe my picture is genuinely better than the other guys, im voting for myself. If I believe someones posted something that makes mine look like crap, then they get the vote. To just overlook yourself for no other reason than public pride isnt in my line of thinking.

    We may need another 6 page thread on just how to vote.

    @mars - what's with all the horizontal lines ? Is that supposed to be light through the blinds ?

    I really had a hard time working in black and white, but it was so much fun. Thank you for the contest!

    The weather was colder than my ex-wife's heart. I'd just got on duty when I was sent out a call. A body found and few other details given. I arrived to find a dismembered girl, a puking patrol officer and few clues. Hell of a start to a night....

    The detective.

    @aftyrbyrn : Thank you. I like yours too. The red dress in a black and white picture is an interesting detail.

    @silverboax Yes. Those are shadows cast from light filtering in through the blinds. That is a trope of Film Noir, as is the use of symbolism in setting up a shot. Rather than just make a pretty render, I wanted to keep true to the spirit of the genre and tell a story visually. I tried to layer the image with lots of symbolism to reinforce the action in the scene.

    Noir Explained

    The shadows from the blinds run perpendicular to the pattern on the walls to elicit the sense that someone has been "crossed." Further, the distance of the primary figures creates larger bands of shadows which are meant to evoke the prisoner uniforms of that era, symbolizing that they are captives to their destiny. The light from the right of the image diminishes those shadows and speaks to the possibility of them breaking free. You'll note also that the hands of the clock point directly to the shadowy figure behind the door and to the skull, representing the menace of death. This is again illustrated in the fact that the shape of the shadowy figure mirrors that of the bottle on the desk. Its position relative to the gun and the primary figures solidifies the danger. This element is accentuated by the fact that the camera beside the skull is pointing at the couple implying that they have been "seen."

    As regards the central figures, the woman's vantage point would allow her to see the figure behind the door. The fact that she's smiling creates ambiguity as to whether she smiles at her lover, or at what is about to happen when the door opens. The tilt of the man's head and the brim of his hat obscure his eyes from the viewer, indicating that he is unaware of the events at hand. Lastly, dividing the image along the rule of thirds creates one line that runs from the figure behind the door to the gun, and another that separates the lovers.

    Light through old school Venetian blinds doesn’t make thin lines like that, especially from what would likely be a pretty small office window. Add on top of that that you’ve just made a black and white image, not a high contrast image which would highlight the streaks from the blinds makes it look like a spreadsheet fell on the render.

    Less acedemia, more spirit.

    P.s. I woulda worded that more politely but the condescending tone of the minute explanation of every detail of the image bluntened my care factor.

    @silverboax I'm not sure how you get condescension from that. It was meant to be more informative. Tempted as I am to dissect your response, I don't come here to quibble with benighted souls. You are indeed entitled to your opinion, but the fact that you aren't even an entrant has blunted my interest in it. I would urge you to be more constructive in your criticism in the future. As the adage goes, if you can't say something nice...

    @robf4g210 Maybe just a couple of honorable mention places with 2000 or 5000 points? There is some great work being posted.

    That is Urban Future 5. It's absolutely stunning all by itself.
