Which is better, Gen 9 vs Gen 8.1.

I decided to do a side by side comparison of both development models and share how I feel about their realism. As everyone knows, people have different body shapes and sizes, so this in no way reflects a definitive experience once you start to add additional morphs.

    Full Size View

I'll start with Genesis 9, on the LEFT SIDE:
    1. Bending the thumb inward, gives a more realistic fat pocket within the palm of the hand.
    2. The shoulder bends more realistically instead of creating a bulge along the upper arm.
    3. The pinky and thumb's finger pads can touch. Though neither figure can make fully pressed contact. The inner palm also appears more natural when the figures are contorted to this degree.
    4. The wrist and tendon create a more natural curvature.
    5. The 'love handle' lays over the thigh more naturally when the leg is lifted high enough.
    6. The leg and thigh create a more natural crease when pressed together.
    7. The genital area doesn't stretch abnormally. Instead the upper thigh and glute pull taunt and create bends/twists.
    8. The foot has a more graceful looking curvature. (This one is just an opinion)
    9. The toes create a more realistic bend and pull when spread. The second toe bends slightly inward even when spread.

The next is Gen 8.1, on the RIGHT SIDE:
    1. The ears are more detailed. (This could be an intended Daz design)
    2. The clavicle feels more realistic. (This is just an opinion)
    3. This one is huge and feels like an oversight on Gen 9. The breasts correspond better with arms movement. (Though I won't deny that some Gen 8 breast movement are completely off at times)
    4. The fat pocket on the forearm becomes more pronounced than with Gen 9. (It is almost not noticeable though, I'll admit)
    5. The underside of the large toe has that extra fat pocket which seems to be gone with Gen 9.

There are some things that I didn't evaluate one way or another such as; knee/elbow/ hip area/ and finger and toe bump/tendon/flesh area between because those will change based on the individual person.

So I tried to keep it exclusive to how most bends/details would work on most normal functioning adult people.

I also did the back side and will post my finds later.

    Thanks for reading.

as far as I have seen on my end, I was a little disappointed with the model, sure it can shapeshift but seeing how it turns out I will stay for the moment with my g8 contents until v9 will be much better.
the only + point I see are expressions its somewhat better, I would expect there will be a g9.1 coming to fix all those problems that we see like g8.

As someone who occasionally uses DAZ Studio characters in other software, i praise the new G9 mesh topology. It's perfect. It will enable 3D artists and 3D sculptors to do much more natural morphs and poses, which was extremely limited and only possible with painful workarounds with the previous figures.
Other than that, I don't mind the unification from male and female into one base character. it may be beneficial in some cases.
The provided starter morphs and pose sliders are solid.

The only bad thing is, NONE of the previous morphs, shapes, poses etc. you may have purchased, will work with G9...

Actually i am thinking about deleting everything pre-G9 from my library, there is no comparison

I am so glad to have this behind me. Most of the work was writing and translating the text, so everything is a little late. I now admire the people who organize a competition. What a job. In any case, here are the winners of Discover the Streets Contest. It was not easy for me. So many wonderful entries. But I think I did it.

First I want to thank @adelasia @lapucelle @plebby @gladson1976 for their donation. Thank you very much

I thought I would do three categories.

    1. the very best. A category for the people who just blew me away.
    2. the best. For the people who put in a lot of work and delivered good ideas.
    3. honorable mention. These are the people who have put in the hours of hard work and took part in this "challenging" competition.

So there is no First, Second or Third place.

There are 6 people in the first category.
There are 8 people in the second category.
And there are 5 people in the third category.

In the first category: 6X22000 points

A homage for Stonemason from Ondrej
    STEAM From tedthelearner
    thomasbr Made Steam
    ewlo did Steamcity

    liwic and Technologic Steam Machine
    WENTLEY persents N.O.W
    Hodor with bloodborne
Bebe Rebozo with The shadow knows

I can not transfer 237000 points at once. So our best admin, @hunter will take care of it.
Oh yeah. I have put 2000 points extra in this contest because of calculation of points. It was easier for me to spread the points.

I hope that I have not made a mistake. If it is, then let me know.
So I wish you a lot of fun and hopefully we will see each other again.
    Luca.

And here the 6 winners first category

    1. A homage for Stonemason from Ondrej.

When I saw this picture, I was immediately in love. Beautiful composition with a charming light. The idea is simple but refined. First I thought...What does that have to do with "Discover the Streets Contest? But then.... A fantastic projection on a table. Simply grandiose. Thank you for your contribution.

    2. STEAM From tedthelearner.

What can I say...A masterpiece, an incredibly image with so much punch. I like new ideas. And you have that really well done. Also later when I looked at your image with a VR viewer....The absolute madness. Thanks for your cool contribution.

    3. thomasbr Made Steam

How simple it can be. A person in a dark environment. You can't even see a face. She has a torch in her hand and illuminates almost the entire surroundings. A spooky environment lights up. What is behind it? You have created with little means, a fascinating image. Thank you for your effort.

    4. ewlo did Steamcity

Okay ewlo, your Steamcity is a knockout. So much to see and so much to discover. Everything is so transparent and you really used your camera correctly. A good depth I can see. And everything is so clear. You must have put a lot of work into this. Simply a masterpiece. Thank you for your beautiful and colorful image.

    5. Spats Steam Sistaaar

And again a great depiction of a smoky and steamy environment. It must not always be dark. The sun shines brightly and you can see that they both have a lot of fun. I toast on your presentation. Cheers I should say

    6. Streets Of Steam Punk from mathmathou

A parallel universe. Who would have thought that. A very nice environment in late summer I should say. She is standing inside the building. A cool camera view. What immediately caught my attention in this picture is that her cyber suit is shining so brightly. Very nice. Thank you for your effort. Hopefully the story about Charlotte continues.

    The 8 winners second category

    7. Frank21 Toto, and his "I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore"

Who does not know "The Wizard of Oz" where the little beloved Toto from Dorothy plays his role. You've done a great job on your characters. You even didn't forget her basket. Wonderful representation. What I also like is that you can see that the earth is shaking a little. Thank you for your fanciful presentation

    8. Plebby The Bag Snatcher

The bag snatcher, a real moving action shot. What a movement you have got there!! I have the feeling that I am very very small. Grandiose camera cut and position. Also this few bloom in de render, I think it fits in this whole dark and mysterious environment. Wonderful my friend. Thanks for your fascinating contribution

    9. adelasia and her Welcome to Steamville

A homeless cat that slowly but consciously makes its way through the night. A robot hovers, two people are standing and talking nonsense. But what is this young lady doing on her suitcase? Magnificent scenery where still much is to be discovered. A really dreamy scene where the light makes its way through the night. Thank you my best for your contribution.

    10. titan3d and Inaru in Steampunkland

Wow. A sexy lady in the pouring rain, waiting for something, she does not know yet. Very impressive. Her almost transparent coat, asks for problems. Who is in charge here? She? Or the two dark shapes on the background. What caught my eye is the drops on her body and coat. Everything fits. Yes, thank you for your contribution. Oh well, hopefully she will get healthy again.

    11. Twiggi Twilla Cold in Cross Worlds

First of all I want to say Twilla is a beautiful name. And yes, she looks a bit like an Egyptian queen and is self-confident. What I like very much is the way she squats there. Through your camera she looks huge. Really well done. Thank you for Vampire Twilla in which the blood of the Egyptian queen Thea Kapan flows.

    12. fuzzy3000 with Welcome to Steampunk Time War

A very exciting story about your Image. I want to write that down here again.

"Wispy, cloud-like, portals were appearing all across Londinium – mayhap across the world. They gave a brief glimpse of futuristic looking architecture, seemingly superimposed upon our reality, before the march of automatons began to cross the threshold into our cities. Powerful energy weapons spewed forth towards all in their way.
The Victoriana female ground force rallied to hold the lines, hoping, praying, that the aerial forces would arrive soon"
A great story that supports your image very well. I wonder how you made the characters. But let that be your secret. All in all, an intoxicating scene. The Streets of Steampunk environment definitely fits. Thank you for your contribution my friend.

    13. Eve Adams and his Midnight Stalkers

Who's stalking who. Yes that I also wonder. I'm curious about your explanation. A nice render in "Hollywood dark style," I like that term. What I really appreciate is the interior lighting and the billboard lighting. Those are the little things that really pop. Thanks for your entry. Hope to see you soon again.

    14. madmungo and his Woohooooooooooo!

Yes really Woohooooooooo! I always wanted to jet around in this way. The gray smoke that sprouts with approximately 34.6 KmH from his jet is incredible. What I also find is cool, his blissful look in his visage.... Your camera has also a stunning view. Thank you for your dynamic contribution.

And the 5 winners third category

    15. Adam with his Zero Covid Policy. You will comply

Oh my gosh what are these big. Should you really watch out when you meet them. One should also adhere to the guideline, right? A simple but expressive render. I'm glad you got it finished, despite the fact that you didn't have much time. There are more important things then sitting behind a computer. Yes, thanks for your contribution. I am very pleased.

    16. liwic and Technologic Steam Machine

Wow, those two have something to tell each other. What, we do not know!. Everything is quite mysterious. You even don't know who's under the helmet either. The first thing I noticed was a small pamphlet on the wall with Lefèvre-Utile printed on it. I still love the LU (biscuits). You probably used gold shaders which are doing just fine. Overall a good picture with the camera at a nice angle. Thanks for your contribution.

    17. WENTLEY and his N.O.W

N.O.W. is a really cool term for your image. When I looked at the picture on my big screen, I was completely transfixed. All in all, I like the "yellow-green" color tone what Fits very well, with the two figures, which both look funny. Thank you for your contribution. It was a pleasure.

    18. Hodor with his bloodborne

Mediokrates, the "lost philosopher" has actually once said "good enough". And I say yes that you have done it well. Everything looks nice in blood color. The fog hides in some way this species very well. Makes everything thrilling. Oh, I almost forgot. Hidden behind the window you can also see something grisly. Thank you for your contribution.

    19. Bebe Rebozo The shadow knows

I was amazed when I saw his picture. That´s indeed is "the Shadow". Imagine...The first Shadow crime episode on the radio was broadcast on July 31, 1930 in the USA.... You've done a great job on your character. Proud as he can be. Thanks for your entry. I enjoyed it.

G9 looks like the last call for the DAZ Studio ecosystem.
My guess - G9 be another incremental improvement of the G3 mesh. It also appears they're going back to having a unified mesh instead of male/female variants like the first generation of Genesis so double the already insanely slow load times.

The place that needed to improve is on the software side. It's years out of date and far too resource intensive for what it does. The still image render quality of former game engines (I guess we should call them general purpose 3D engines now) have almost caught up at much lower performance penalty. Cramming more texture and mesh resolution is only giving diminishing returns when the software engine itself can't use 8K textures efficiently. The 3D engine itself is rather a mess it can't deform bone joints or do collision in a realistic way which is kinda sad when DAZ's entire purpose was posing and rendering 3D human shapes.

On the other hand why bother? At this point improving DAZ Studio incrementally is a lost cause because they've let it's core go completely out of date by years. They need to scrap it and start over from scratch. They'll go back to being a store front selling figures for other render software.

Although they have nothing to do with Daz or any 3D program, they do seem to me to analyze FAC (Facials...) and the anatomy of the human being. Very suitable for those who use the ZIVA plugin in Maya, or Zbrush to make "blendshapes" morphs...

Best way I have found to reduce loading time is to keep a folder, separate from the main library with only the morphs I use regularly in it. I have a second folder with all the other unused character morphs and when I want to experiment, I add it to daz, load a G8 and create a character. I then save it, unlink the "creation" folder and reload the one I just made. I then only move the morphs it whines about missing into my "permanent" character data folder. I am more of a slider user than using premade shapes so you can guess that I have extremely few full body morphs or head morphs in my permanent folder. DAZ3D Michael 8? I don't use the full body shape, I just got him as I collect skins. Some characters I only use PBMs or PHMs, no MCMs or eJCMs. Like Michael 8 has none so none of his morphs are in my main morph folder.

I look at it like this. Let's say you have a closet with a few things in it. Easy to find what you want. Now fill the closet with all sorts of random stuff. Harder to find things. Let's admit it, we all probably have a whole boatload of random stuff thanks to this site.

Greeting. Adam Thwaites has released Celebrity Series 113 and Adam has out done himself in his ability to render huge hairy moles. I'm not even going to guess at who this is supposed to be, because I can't get the images of those gigantic moles on her face out of my mind!

As usual, I will trade any [1] of the Celebrity Series characters[1-113] for one [1] of these Anatomically Correct figures.

    Anatomically Correct: Birgit

It's up to the community as to what you want to see. My vote is to leave it as open as possible. I don't want to force someone into a Sci-Fi corner if they love fantasy. Movies come in all shapes and sizes so that's a broad spectrum.

A render size should probably be set. I'm up for 2K maybe even 4k but I'm not sure how other systems will handle that. I'd like to have as many people as possible. 2K may be some peoples limit. Any more input on this would be great.

Again, I'm open to all suggestions and input. I'd like this to bring the community together and get as many entries as we can.

Do you like having 2 winners or should we have 1 or 3? The pots up to 60k now.

    @d0gg0d,

"Not much different than creating a character morph and applying the same texture as 10 other characters they have with a mole moved from the left cheek to the right cheek."

This is true, but the same could be said for the shape as well. I can recognize something made by SASE without ever seeing the name - if you remove the skin and made them all the same shade of gray, you'd have maybe three character variations from that vendor. They're far from being alone, though. It is exceedingly rare to find someone that can do a wide variety of shapes and skins.

I kitbash the heck out of my characters as well, mostly because I want that custom shape and texture combo.

    @eelgoo

ref: "Morph integrity is lost with every transfer."

Yep, because the meshes don't match up as Abad rightly explained, and it's compounded by the fact that you're also dealing with SubD in the Genesis figures.

the best you can hope for is to convert it all over, and then take the last step of exporting your v4 and converted G8 figures out to .obj, then matching the G8 version as closely as possible in some external mesh-wrestling application, like Blender.

Note that it also helps if you can convert the textures up as well (and convert them for use in iRay). Most people don't quite realize it, but the skintex is at least half of the character's personality, so finding something "close" simply won't do. It's best to convert it up.

I've had conversion runs that became utter failures, because they just plain look too different. In some cases though, I've had some that turned out far better than the original, and became newer/better characters in their own right. In one case, I had what was originally a supporting character become one of my best main characters in existence after converting it up...

I guess the best philosophy is to realize that your old characters will never really, truly make the jump. Relish waht was, archive them, and enjoy them for what they were. But also realize you can create newer, better ones from the experience. That conversion is an excellent time to toy around a bit with new textures, hair sets, and even tweak on the shapes a bit (eyes, face, body etc)... you might be surprised at what you discover.
