Ero talked a lot about Poser in one of the VERY NSFW forums he inhabited and he mentioned that he'd made a lot of changes to it. He was not only a gifted artist, but a programmer too.

Yeh I remember him complaining about the hoops he had to jump through when making Project Evolution/Lali.

I think a major reason why they are not showing the migrated content as new is because most of them are G8 ones. Releasing too many G8 products as new may send out the wrong signals to the community (like Daz still promoting G8 content).

Which, if they had any sense they would be doing.

Also they may well be using the original publication dates.
If that is their agenda, which it probably is, it would dovetail in nicely for them.

    Some thoughts...

re. Erogenesis - He did things with Python that the various code teams on Poser should have been doing. The man was awesome at what he did. I almost went out and got Poser again based solely on his technical notes. As a point of fact, if the Poser team had only invested more in keeping Python current, and in exposing more of Poser's internal workings to Python (so people like Ero could do more awesome things with it), Poser wouldn't be in nearly as much irrelevance and trouble as it is today.

re. DAZ/Rendo - this morning, they just announced even more big names coming over. Unlike previous times when Rendo would do something dumb and 1-2 artists would leave in a huff, I think that this time their management team actually screwed the pooch. It's going to be expensive to get them back, and Renderosity needs as many artists as they can get hands on if they expect to survive in this still-shrinking market.

re. Poser itself - the video was dead-on. There was once a time when every CG house had a copy or two of Poser stashed aside for whatever reason. Now, the render outputs are so outdated, they're considered to be utter crap. The latest and greatest un-retouched/postworked Poser renders are still not much better than what you could find in 2003-2004.

The remaining Rendo forum dwelling crowd consists of a few kind-but desperate hostages to nostalgia, mixed with a rabid fanbase that will brook no criticism (the latter having been quiet of late, but then, Rendo's Poser forum is nearly dead anyway.)

Overall, this corner of the hobbyist market appears to be on a slow decline. I think Poser will finally die in the next 5 years, tops. DS in the next 7-10 years.

All is not lost, though. The first company that creates an AI-based app suite that allows for controlled character creation, and doesn't require a subscription or an Internet connection, will be the one that captures the whole group, and will re-invigorate the market.

*chuckle* those are great points @pooper.
I don't see Daz dying as long as it gets off it's ass and brings out Studio 5. Where AI could help is in rendering, draping of fabrics, and soft and hard body physics.
I feel that the disappointment with AI (as it is now) will leave a big place for Studio.

SickleYield explains leaving Rendo. A few years old but probably still relevant.

Today's inbox had yet another PA who fled Rendo - Lully.

I think DAZ is saving these up and dribbling them out, one by one.

at this point, they took them all in, knowing how fast the ship is sinking at Rendo.

I don't see why Daz would want Poser.

They can't properly implement their own software, let alone something that requires substantially more work.

I was surprised 'Rosity took on Poser. I suspect they got it cheap.

For years their staple income has been from Daz Genesis based items.

I can see a niche for them, with their active support of G8 based items.
This is in stark contrast to Daz, where they have very much sidelined it.

Like I mentioned in another post, I updated my asset database last week-end (which I hadn't done for a long time) and noticed several thousands new additions to the DAZ store. I was not sure if this was off the chart or not since I hadn't updated for quite some time.

Today with my morning coffee, I launched my scraper again (Wednesday morning here) and since Sunday, there were 639 new additions to the store. At this rate, SKU numbers will reach 100 000 at DAZ in two weeks 🙂

More seriously, if you take for example this "new" addition : "dForce - Slingback Dress for G8F", it's sold at $5.98 on promo at DAZ (regular price $11.95) here:
    https://www.daz3d.com/dforce-slingback-dress-for-g8f
when it was discounted at only $7.10 at Renderosity (same regular price) here:
    https://www.renderosity.com/marketplace/products/126785/dforce---slingback-dress-for-g8f
and now tagged as no longer available.

I've seen a lot of additions ranging from G2 to G8/8.1 (and some G9 of course) and the artists names are "renowned" ones, not week-end hobbits. I'm not sure what's going on but, like someone mentioned earlier, it strangely resembles what happened with RDNA and more recently with HiveWire 3D. Another shop closing on the horizon?

But then, what do you make of this 2024 January blog post announcing work on Poser 14?
    https://www.posersoftware.com/article/689/poser-13-savings-poser-14-development-update

With overall quality already declining (personal point of view), I'm not comfortable with the idea that, in some not so distant future maybe, we might be left with just one main online shop for DAZ assets. Why invest time and money in improving your software in such a case?

Like in every other market, and I'm not including myself in that last statement considering the number of legit assets I own, who would be the great looser in such a situation? The consumer I fear.

Good day to all of you

"Daz might plan to get hands on Poser, who knows!"

Don't see why not - DAZ owns Bryce and Cararra (was RayDream). Only two other MetaCreations products are still out there: Poser, and Canoma (which Adobe bought and buried).

Heh - Canoma still exists, sort of: https://www.canoma.com/

Poser used to be able to ride off of the RWBY train, given the late Monty Oum used that exclusively for his animations, but after he suddenly died and (the now defunct) Rooster Teeth team that took over the show moved to industry standard animation programs like Maya, Smith-Micro couldn't even use that anymore as a selling point.

It's a shame. I know I've thrown shade at Poser in the past but competition does breed healthy markets and good products for the consumers. If Renderosity could've gotten their shit together, Poser could've had a remarkable rebirth and given Daz much-needed competition. Hell, if Poser had a bridge or plug-in that could import its stuff into Blender or Unreal that was on par with Diffeomorphic (which isn't perfect but it's the best out there rn), I'd seriously consider buying, no joke.

Years ago, when Rendo took over Poser, I had a hunch that they would eventually find a way to drive the Daz content off of their site, despite it being a big seller. With a lot of big vendors having made the move to Daz's storefront and potentially even more by the end of the week, I do wonder if that's closer to reality than we think. Hmmm.

Fuck renderosity, it's the single WORST place to buy anything Daz/poser related!

For me, it will not allow me to update my account info until I buy something, and it's in my cart, yet I can't FUCKIN' buy anything, because I don't have the properly updated account info!

*(I spent a week or so trying to fix the issue, yet their inept staff could not do jack shit about it!)

I am somewhat glad that I'm not the only one that has this issue, as even one of Daz's members are also fed up with them as well!

So yeah, hopefully all vendors of note leaves that idiotically run marketplace, which is not surprising that it's based in Tenn, as computer illiteracy is PROUDLY defended as a virtue!

just got an email from Rendo. it sounds like they are in full panic mode

"The last eighteen months have been eventful here at Renderosity. Read on for a brief timeline. In Feb ’23 we released an updated version of the Renderosity marketplace. This marked the final phase of a two-year site modernization effort designed to improve the site and streamline future
    development work.

Faced with unexpected staff turnover in summer ‘23, we decided to revitalize the business by hiring key new staff, updating business strategy and implementing new processes such as professional customer and vendor support.

In Nov ’23 we implemented new Vendor Terms to ensure the long-term success of the Renderosity business. This created friction with some vendors who preferred the prior terms and that would set the stage for some vendors to migrate to competing sites in Apr ’24.

While we hate to see vendors leave, we ultimately know that competition is a good thing. The alternative is a monopoly with one provider of software and digital content for the community. This doesn’t usually end well.

So, on behalf of the Renderosity team, the best we can do is to ensure Renderosity is a healthy business and that we will be here for buyers and vendors when they need us in the future. We would like to sincerely thank everyone who has tolerated the dust and occasional growing pains
as we have worked to improve the site over the last 18 months. It has been far from perfect and we’re working continuously to improve, but we greatly appreciate the opportunity to serve.

    Tim Choate
    President/CEO, Bondware, Inc. DBA Renderosity.com"
