A lot of folk collect a lot of different things.

Ultimately, there is not a lot of point in doing anything.

If it gives you pleasure, it is whatever floats your boat.

"Ddownloading shit load of content" is fine if you're going to use the stuff. I won't suggest that people don't but participation in our art competitions is very low considering the number of members we have here. Should we have a survey on what members do with all the stuff they're downloading?

Wanted to participate in the Calendar contest but I don't have a GPU and rendering on a dual core third generation pentium is too slow so I won't be able to complete the renders in time.

Not a bad idea. I actually wrote a program that makes an index of the Daz archives and extracts the promo images from them which is then used by another program that allows me to browse/ search the stuff (it also had a tagging feature in it but it had to be done manually) and see the promos. It was fun. But I don't do much rendering. Just archiving the content.

@3dnoob - you're pretty much stuffed with a Pentium III and without a GPU for DS.
Are you planning to buy a new system? You could always rent one 🙂

@frank22 haha, no thanks. My computer works decent for my use case. I don't need a supercomputer, definitely not a rented one. I just like to tinker around with Daz and Blender, that's all. If rendering was the main purpose, I'd get a new machine.

Also, I think you're confusing a third generation pentium (Ivy bridge) that came out in 2013 with the pentium III (I don't think they had two cores back then) but I get what you're saying. I'm sure calculators these days have stronger processors.

    🙂

I'm surprised you can do much at all without a dedicated GPU. When I even turn off my browser hardware acceleration it slows to a crawl. Trying to render anything in DS/Blender must be slow as all hell.

Really? At some point I had over 300 chrome tabs open on my computer and it worked just fine (of course most of them were suspended by chrome and had to be refreshed but it didn't crash), no issues with full hd video playback either. I don't do anything too crazy in blender and it works okay. Daz viewport is also fine for the most part (it starts to lag if I have something with too many polygons but that's expected). Or course Iray is quite slow indeed.

    One viewpoint.
External drives in the tb's range are fairly cheap (I have over
    a dozen)
If you can make the time to catalog that which you
download you have archives for future use.
Assume, for the sake of argument, you have a job creating
a concept piece from World War 2.
    Uniforms, weapons, background, buildings, terrain.
I have been collecting for years and have a huge library
It is fairly easy tp put together, with minimal effort,
something the client can use or at least a jumping off
    point.
    Cataloging and storing are essential.
    Luck

The beautiful thing about DAZ and your art - is that not everyone knows what you do with the program. For myself I pretty make what I want and as I don't share most of it anywhere anymore. I keep everything on one of my drives, and in the past have deleted a few things no longer used.

Yep Elim, I think that covers the majority of us. But it's nice to show some for your stuff from time to time, either in the hope of winning some competition points, or just joining in with the ZGFX community spirit. I like to think this place is more than just a shop.

    @3dnoob

    Hi,
I remember my 1st PC - which was a Pentium III. Not sure of the manufacturer but it was a DX2-66, with a 230Mb HDD.
    A 2nd 230MB drive cost £250 from PC World,
It was a business purchase at the time and cost £1000 at auction.
Quality and cost have improved a little since - lol

    🙂

Why I am stockpiling items? First reason is I learned from the past that stuff won't be online forever and that everything available here can be gone on tomorrow. When that happens, you're glad to have things on some HDD: you may not use it right now, but you never know when you will need it.
Second reason is I'm often using 2/3 environments + props to make one scene. Picking elements fitting what I have in mind for the picture. Having options then us super handy.
