Also consider: The cottage industry in "converters".
Old Poser items can now be adapted quickly to newer Daz scenes.
Within Daz itself older items are now current (with a little work)
Figures, hair, clothing, textures once thought "obsolete" are given
new life.
The word "hoarding" can now be interchanged with "investing"December 9, 2024 at 4:38 PM #2107196My main use of DS is to illustrate visual novels and (tabletop) RPG scenarios booklets. Generally nasty stuff, NSFW and horror or fantasy. I have hoarded a lot from 2012 to 2022 to maintain a large spectrum of opportunities (clothes, body types, environments, historical or peculiar props), you never know what you need in the end (I remember desperately searching for a good janitor broom or a renaissance arquebuse)... I am now extremely picky (and it is easy with the generally lower quality of products, notably dForce stuff and useless cumbersome G9 paraphernalia). We could consider this place as a provisory archive but I must admit I hate when I see things presented as new posts when I know they were made available years ago here (I do not talk about legit reposts or former torrented old treasures from past poser era, new hobbyists may gain from these), but there were debates long ago about this trend and it seems I was in the refuznik minority.
But I would say that the zone was a great help to constitute a work base (totally unaffordable for non pirates), and the community remains positive and friendly most of the time.
So let's roll...
Sorry for becoming nostalgic...December 9, 2024 at 5:41 PM #2107213Echo Corbeau......underline
Same kind of work!!!December 9, 2024 at 9:30 PM #2107231Generally nasty stuff, NSFW and horror or fantasy.
Nothing wrong with that and it could explain why most/some people don't participate in the art comps as it's not permitted. I wonder in what ratio (NSFW vs SFW ) people produce their art. I guess it's about 50/50 for me.December 10, 2024 at 5:30 AM #2107266@fuzzy3000 hi!
Not sure of the manufacturer but it was a DX2-66, with a 230Mb HDD
230 MB should be just about enough* to store an 8k hdri. Crazy.
* after compressionQuality and cost have improved a little since, lol
But software has become worse, more inefficient. I'm sure you could get windows xp to run on less RAM than that used by the windows 11 weather widget.
😀December 10, 2024 at 7:11 AM #2107271Ah!! The good old days.
CorelDraw, at the time, was state-of-the-art and installed in just under 66MB
🙂December 10, 2024 at 2:19 PM #2107324About the reasons why I end up with that much data mainly for Daz and a little bit for other programs, it is all because of the horrible way that products are distributed throughout the Libraries, and especially because of the content creators not keeping up with a standardized classification of their files, especially datas, textures and geometries.
I do not use everything from each products I download. I absolutely hate using the environments the way the creator intended for it to appear. I will usually use parts of this environment, parts of that one, and I will create the environment I want with this piece of furniture I found here and this artwork from that one, I will create my own lighting of the rooms using these chandeliers, you get the point.
So more often than not, I end up downloading a whole environment just because I want the rug that sits in the middle of the room. And then I am stuck with the whole package because it would require for me to be even more cautious while retrieving the files to throw them away so I don't also get rid of the rug by mistake.
So basically, while I am currently working on a grand total of 147 scenes at the moment, that I have little time to go and find stuff to delete, then stuff keeps piling up.

If I may suggest.
One day of the week, in the morning.
1.Run cleaners on the PC (s)registry, pups, adware.
2. Run backups
3. Set aside one hour devoted to cataloging, archiving,
moving files off of the PC.
My company pays for a tech guy to come in every so often and double check my systems.
Years ago we devised approaches to maintenance.i am fortunate to have a multi computer system.
So, I can work on one computer, while doing maintenance on the
other.
The most important thing is to do it religiously every week.
If you have never done it, in the beginning, it is a pain in the
ass.
But, once setup, you can find anything in minutes.
You get the time spent back, plus
You will no longer feel hesitant downloading more "stuff"
LuckDecember 11, 2024 at 5:45 AM #2107475All of my 3D stuff is set on two 8Tb EHD (one is backup), so my computer is not encountering any problems running. I do my cleanups regularly, run my AV and all that jazz. I am no novice, and I operate a Titan A900 that was customized for my needs. I do not have a problem with any slow down and I can produce and render full landscapes with at least a dozen G8 characters while watching a HD movie. And this is why I keep hoarding without real care even though I know that I will never use more than 1% of what is on my drives, as I use parts of each products. I just wish these programs would be more user-friendly and have a way to unpack everything from a product in one location instead of being scattered all over the place like they are, which would render the task of getting rid of a product easier. Each pieces could also be packed together with its own mats, geometries and datas, as in a folder for each different chairs, with their own datas and etc. in the same folders, like it's already the case with the OBJ files, or at the very least being easy to find, delete, without affecting all the other items. Or perhaps if we could get some kind of uninstaller that could get rid of the stuff in one go. But it's not a big deal, because I have the machine, I have the storage, I merely find annoying the fact that when I want to find something to fit in my scenes, it's actually faster to go through a Files Explorer search than through the program itself, and that it took 36 hours off my creative time to clone my most recent backup. I'm too lazy to go through a vast inventory cleanup that will end up costing me and my Patreon accounts much more in time with my computer not producing renders full masts for any periods of time. I can't slow down or I'll lose patrons, who are expecting a certain number of images in at least 5K each and every months. Time is unfortunately money. And I also have a full time 40+ hours a week job.
December 11, 2024 at 2:21 PM #2107540Totally understand and sympathize.
Have you given some thought to "farming out" some
of the work.
I am sure in your area there are younger people looking
to make extra money or learn.
The only problem would be if you have NDA's.
They are a source of problems you would not believe.
One possible solution. if you find someone trustworthy, would be to put
them in charge of maintenance and cataloging, while you do
the regular work.
Again we are talking about two to three hours a week.
Mentally this would relieve a lot of the pressure.
Feel your pain(?)
LuckDecember 11, 2024 at 9:47 PM #2107617i don't have a storage problem , i have a postpone issue , the more time i postpone , the tons of stuff i want to download is accumulated
December 12, 2024 at 4:39 PM #2107701LOL, ikr. i've been out for about 2yrs, and now coming back i'm rather scared to even start looking too deep. at least until i get a new PC built with tons more HD space.
December 12, 2024 at 5:44 PM #2107714AI is very close to wipeout 3D industry , we beating a dead horse here
December 13, 2024 at 9:34 AM #2107815We heard that about writing when the phone was invented. We heard that about painting when photography came along. And yet painting is still very alive, it simply evolved differently. And I would say that although people may not be writing long and well written letters, texto is more popular than phone calls nowadays. Anyway, if there's nothing to feed AI, then it will start being redundant, cause AI is to imagery what DJ samplers are to music.
December 13, 2024 at 10:39 AM #2107824I think your last sentence there nailed it. 🙂
Anything that derivative has to get its fuel from somewhere.
