Playboy died a long time ago. It's not even a shell of what it used to be.
Torrents have killed usenet. Other than old TV shows and movies, there's nothing worth getting there. The classic tv and movie forums are still active and requests usually get filled pretty quickly.
November 2, 2021 at 11:41 AM #1745226@ulysses , that's why I wonder if using old models, like Vicky4.2, suit the needs of users. It seems to be the case: There are people who use that for I don't know what ... porn-show posters in the neighborhood? Invitations to "remember" clubs? Usenet, e-Donkey, etc ..., are old methods, just like my usual early Internet uses, like Ghopher, IRC, etc ... "We are here and now, not 15 years ago!"
November 2, 2021 at 12:51 PM #1745236I still use usenet to mostly get old westerns, both movies and tv shows. I love 'em. I also use it to get shows from the 80's, which is what I watched growing up.
I don't d/l any DAZ stuff that isn't G8 or 8.1. There is new stuff coming out all the time, so why get bogged down with older stuff is my philosophy. bth, I end up creating my own characters anyway, and have been moving to blender for the past year. So other than some interesting clothing articles and pose packs that I don't want to recreate myself, I don't use 99% of what I end up d/ling.
Some folks are into porn. Some aren't. I'm not, so I don't know why people get so wrapped up with it. From what I can tell, it's as destructive as booze or drugs if you get obsessed with it. Plus, the girls/women in the industry are horribly mistreated most of the time. To each their own.
November 3, 2021 at 12:13 PM #1745463Maybe you don't understand my post.
It is nothing to do with Usenet (Which has been very unpopular in Europe ..., and which I have never used.)
The Victoria or Michael 4 (or 4.2) model is obsolete, yes or yes! There is no choice. And I understand that some people use it, out of comfort or laziness, so I don't know what final product is required.
As for Poser, the lovely thing was programming in Python. I think I was more open to assuming fbx than not DS ..., which is from Texas town dummies! LOL
We have new tools. We can expand our work beyond a framework such as Genesis 8 or 8.1, towards a work of real 3D realism: The MakeHuman or proposals as in Blender by Manuel Bastioni are so far away, that everything seems to be solved with unity or unreal with its new " MetaHuman ". And I disagree !!!
We depend on companies, and their work, but you have to find an easy way to put everything together in a universal format. Blender opts for its own, Daz with its Dson garbage, Autodesk with its fbx and its different ways of making a bindig, be it in bip or hik !!. To, on top of it, put up with the old V4, with its badly done IK shit !!!! (And, shut up now. I'm going to make a new lingeries for V4, lest I be stale and outdated too ...)November 3, 2021 at 7:23 PM #1745580Like playboy, V4 is dead. Some people don't want to admit it, but those people still cling to Poser as well (which is also dead). Joining them in death are Genesis and G2. Soon, G3 will join them in the graveyard.
I don't begrudge folks for wanting to continue to use V4 (or read Playboy for whatever reason), but they're all dead. No longer alive. Lots of dead things can still be useful, but they're still dead.
Some poster had terabytes of V4 stuff and offered to post it if anyone wanted it. I think a handful of folks were interested iirc.
November 3, 2021 at 8:29 PM #1745591I get nostalgia. I sometimes take things off the backup disk and muck around with it for old times' sake. I don't do it in any serious work, though, and many times, I'll take something old out of the dusty archives, but really, I only do it to see how (and if!) I can modernize it. Sometimes a bit of weight-mapping and SubD does the trick. Sometimes I find myself staring at it to see how I can force-transfer the thing without the whole export/poly-push/import rigamarole.
When I first opened Poser (3) and messed around with it, I was awestruck. When I finally figured out how the render thingmabob worked, I was flabbergasted. I look back on my ancient renders now, and half of me wants to swoon while the other half recoils in disgust.
It's sort of like pulling out an old bit of artwork I made as a kid. I remember every little stroke and creative decision I used to make it. At no point would I stop and think "Gee, I need to grab a box of crayons and a sheet of butcher's paper so I can draw another one!" Instead, I mentally locate a bouquet of pastels and an oversized sketchbook in the study, and only then decide if I want to fart around with making some art on like media... or not.
November 3, 2021 at 9:16 PM #1745595I thought Poser would be dead by now but people still use it. Same with V4. To some G3 is dead and G8 will die with the release of G9. I still use G3 but dont use V4.
That said, I am unsure as to why altered clothing would not benefit G8. I know why I do not miss V4 but Im not sure why giving G8 a bigger and in some cases better wardrobe is flawed logic.
Ive taken old object from Poser and Daz to give them a new coat of Iray and have yet to see a difference from an OBJ file that was 7 years old to one that is 7 days old. Not sure how many of you could tell me the visual difference between an untextured OBJ table and the date it was made.
10 year old pron is just as effective at achieving its goal as 1 year old pron.

You also can work for yourself from what I understand with the invention of the internet.
Depending on your location and appearance stripping is probably a better alternative
https://www.comparably.com/salaries/salaries-for-stripperNot sure how many of you would toss a woman out of bed for being 29 instead of 22 or dump her because she wears a shirt her sister gave her 7 years ago. My wife wears my shirts and I like it for some odd reason.
And yes. V4 should have her own section. Poser specifically should since we now have La Femme

I'm pretty sure nobody is going to stuff money into a thong if I were the one wearing it...
November 4, 2021 at 2:05 PM #1745701"I see all this ancient “V4” stuff and it makes me wonder, who is actually using it and for what purpose?"
I am! I use Poser to make dodgy amateur fetish-y stuff and 90% of the time my figure of choice is V4. Not because she's the best or the most realistic, she isn't. But I've tweaked my own V4 with weight mapping and I know how she works. And I have loads of stuff for her.
Same goes for Poser in general. I'm used to it and I know I can hack the files to fix anything that doesn't work. If someone asks me how to get into 3D, I point them at DAZ. It's free and you can get awesome results quickly. No contest.
I post my pics on deviantArt mostly, in an account set up specially for that stuff. I won't link it here because I want to keep a distance between GFX and "the other" me.
"I think it would be helpful for most users ... to see the old Poser stuff quietly relegated to a separate area ..."
I agree, that would benefit both sides.
November 4, 2021 at 6:58 PM #1745791You might be surprised at what some people like. I've seen some really disturbing things online and not much surprises me any more.
November 4, 2021 at 9:12 PM #1745821If a thing exists, there is porn of it - rule 34 of the internet.
To clarify, it turns out that my own interests are about as dark as vanilla ice cream. But I've seen things. We all have...
November 6, 2021 at 1:50 AM #1746036LOL I find it amusing that people are complaining they have to scroll through a WHOLE PAGE of "undesirable" stuff to get to the content they want. Just because it isn't useful to you doesn't mean it isn't to someone else. V4 characters themselves aren't particularly useful to me either, especially the ones to which you're referring, but somehow I manage to scroll past without breaking my finger.
There aren't many sites like this interested in posting the old V4 stuff anymore, probably because the preview images look like crap with the ancient shaders. But I for one am glad they continue to do so. I really enjoy dressing my G8 girl in V4 clothes, and the results come out superior to a lot of the new stuff because someone took time to actually model a collar or put details into the mesh or make a decent bump map. They knew the rendering engines sucked back then and did their best to compensate, and it definitely shows in the newer rendering engines.
It's not just fetish people. It's not just people who have been around and suffer from nostalgia. It's not just Poser people. I came to the 3D scene via Blender just before G8.1 was released and do renders no more risque than PG-13, and yeah, I prefer V4 clothes with no squishy memories or kink required. People just like different things.
November 7, 2021 at 8:54 PM #1746537I may be wrong... but there's a program, Virt-A-mate... I think it uses V4 clothes. So V4 stuff still is used.Plus, there is a lot of stuff made for V4 that some of us would love to see converted to Gen 8. Like Aeon Soul, I think that is his name, I would love to have his old stuff converted._edit... Sorry. I was wrong. VAM uses gen 2... Still, I would like to get some aeon souls old things converted.
November 7, 2021 at 9:39 PM #1746539@blunder Have you tried this for converting? https://zonegfx.com/rssy-clothing-converter-from-victoria-4-to-genesis-8-female/ It's actually pretty decent and seems to work on most of the V4 stuff.

I can 1000% agree to this bit of it. Ever since dForce and shape projection came out, a lot of vendors got incredibly lazy. I'll even add one other thing in favor of the old v4 stuff: The vendors back then had to be highly efficient with the poly counts and texture sizes. Nowadays, I still find myself shocked that some random 'dForce bra + panties set!', which comes with no particular morphs, mind, will have 150k polys, 10230 px square texture/displacement/normal maps, and weigh in at somewhere like 350+ MB.
