It seems very arcane & hit or miss at the moment.

I think I would feel a little more confident in it if I knew what was where & what it did.

What really made me query it was that I couldn't persuade the exe to dump the files off into my dummy Daz installation.

@eelgoo check out the Daz product page and scroll down to video. That explains a bit about it.

    Ah thanks for the tip.

    I'll give it a shot.

I doubt it could make the situation any more awkward.

    🙂

OK So that is it in action, and it does look pretty impressive.
I suspect as its screen location is in the Tools tab, it is calling up a .dll plug in file?
What I would really like to see is a file list for the product.
    🙂

Can't help you there. Unless there's a link from the Daz page somewhere.

    @eegloo File list here:

Very easy to find any product, just click the range for the item's SKU, then look it up in the alphabetical listing that calls up. Bam, all your technical details right there.

Also, this tool is a GODSEND. All the detail work that clothing helpers and such just can't tackle! Add warts and stuff without geo-grafting, the mind runs wild...

Thank you for your feedback LivingPixels. I've been waiting for people to give their own opinion about this plug-in.

At first, i was interested in it when it came out. But after i've seen many many people reporting having tons of trouble installing it and making it even work at first, my expectation and desire to try it rapidily turned around and ran with it's tail between it's leg.

I decided to wait and see what people would say about it first.

Today, i kind feel like it's not worth the trouble of installing it and trying to use it. 🙁

So anyway, now that you've seen what that pluging had to offer, do you think it's worth the problem of installing it and learn how it work over someone who use Daz's D-Former base tool for poke through cloth fixing and collision skin contact ?

The theory is sound, but in practice I find it nearly impossible to get decent results in a reasonable amount of time.

    A shame.

A very nice idea, but clunky implementation.

Agreed livingpixels. DAZ needs to do a serious upgrade to the underlying system (5.0 perhaps) and then move on to the next version of their genesis line (G9 perhaps). dForce was the last serious and significant offering from them and that was 2½ years ago. Are they getting lazy?

I also gave up on mesh grabber. it was flaky and my system always handles .exe files badly because I have my content spread over a m.2 and a SDD.

G8 is getting a bit long in the tooth. G3 was doing really well when DAZ released G8. Maybe they had internal data telling them vendor sales were starting to slow, but I think it was more to do with decreasing the polys from G3 to G8 so unity and other game dev software wouldn't throw up when using DAZ-produced products.

I don't see anything challenging DAZ for the hobbyists $$$$. imo, Blender is a better product and it's free as well and does a lot more stuff, but there's not a PA community for Blender like DAZ. But natively moving mesh in Blender is heads and shoulders above what DAZ can do, even with add-on tools. My 2¢

With a number of negative reactions to Mesh Grabber, is there any benefit to the newly added 'Update' version?

Does it solve any issues raised, or provide any new benefits?

    Any feedback.....?

I haven't tested the previous versions, but installed the latest update today, and played with it for a little bit. It seems, to me, like a VERY useful tool, for a lot of specific usage, which, while possible to achieve with other methods, often takes a lot of trial and error, not to mention are very finicky - while this is VERY simple.

Note: I used the DIM-installer, it worked fine, I'm using the 4.12 Beta.

As for "things this is useful for", I immediately see creating primitives that are not only round, flat or square, but with actual rounded edges and such, while keeping rigidity.

Other things can be creating soft-body collissions, indents in seating, skin denting from straps and the like (way too many assets don't include these morphs), not to mention easy manipulation of assets which doesn't have morphs at all, like hair, plants, fabric and the like. Want to make your cutting board actually have dents and "cuts" from knives? Not a problem. Want to create piercing wounds? Again, not a problem.

As someone else mentioned, this could probably also be used to mock together realistically looking terrain and the like, and will probably be a godsend for manipulating already dForced content, which isn't QUITE right, without having to redo the entire simulation.

I see this as a VERY useful tool, and Man Friday as one of the best PAs on the DAZ-site at the moment, actually trying to improve the main product. I wouldn't be surprised if some of his efforts are included into DAZ prime within a few versions.

LivingPixels; I have now the updated version, and the plugin has become much better.

I can vouch for this, the updated tool addresses a few shortfalls, like the ability to drive the influence scale all the way to zero, and the ability to input scale values directly, to a much finer degree than the previous 0.5 increments. Some other minor tweaks.
LivingPixels brings up a bunch of good points, but on the whole, IMHO this is a rather amazing tool, I find myself using it it to cheat like hell and save me the time of doing complex and lengthy simulations (although it certainly is NO replacement for dForce).
