I have a question that may seems stupid but... What's the difference between a curved and a flat backdrop? What are they for?

In the example I saw, the curved infinity cove is a backdrop used for no seams, contrary to a floor and a wall, where you can see the junction where the floor meets the wall.

Just gee whiz, but when I first started with 3D in Max, I either didn't know about IBL, or it hadn't been realized. When I read the post on my email regarding curved vs flat, I thought the reference was to using a flat backdrop vs a cylinder or semi-sphere for your environment. Curved backdrops prior to IBL created a sky background with less distortion than flat.

So i used the curved backdrop in my submission for the site banner with the western look. That way, i get the ground and the mountains to look seamless, create solid looking ground, that was my first go at curved backdrop.

It's a curved backdrop, and I stretched and scaled it (HUGE) to give it the perception of depth and allow shadows to fall on the ground. The picture/backdrop i used is like 5 or 10 times larger than what is seen here (can't remember), but to get the scaling and look right, it was what worked.

Ooooh! That makes sense now. Thank you for the answers.

Ive messed with curved a bit. I didnt like the flatness of the flat backround :/ Also most professional photoshoots ive seen use a curved backround. If not textured and the model is far enough away to not cast shadows on it, its kinda like an infinite backround.
