I love a lot of the renders here, but one thing i have noticed, alot of the renders use background images which are not being used right. Lighting doesn't match, rendering just one character with the image, seems like the background is getting most of the credit for the render, and its a photo. Just saying.

Perhaps you could make a tutorial of the correct way and upload a few of your images. Im all for learning a better way to improve my stuff

McNare has a point... I try to always use the image loaded on a backdrop plane, and render it along the figue, when I need a background like that, to set the lighting for it. It's not perfect, but works for most of the cases. Now, as a rule of thumb, the key is observing the background picture that's to be used... particularly how it's lit. Light hues, and angles mostly, with intensity being the second most important part. Then, set the scene lights to match the hues and angles (intensity can be left untouched, as it can easily be fixed afterwards in photoshop).

Making a point is good. Going the extra mile and showing how you would do it is better. Showing how others do it, we seen how that turned out. I try to not make broad statements I cant back up personally. I could say, I think this looks better if you do this. Telling random people they suck and not backing it up with your own work isn't the way to improve anything. Its trolling even if it is true.

I pretty much gotta be with @D0GG0D on this point. All I could see in the OP was "I don't like the way people do stuff, it should be done differently." And in all honesty, that comment wouldn't mesh well with just about every artist I've met over the years, and I'm no spring chicken. So I pose the question, What is art? Plato said art was the imitation of nature. Marc Chagall said art was the unceasing effort to compete with the beauty of flowers and never succeeding. James Whistler proclaimed if the man who paints only the tree, or flower, or other surface he sees before him were an artist, the king of artists would be the photographer.

Simply put, art is defined by it's creator and those who appreciate it. - Me, just now.

@macanare : Can you show us some examples? You can take one of mine if that's the case. I'm still learning... I love rendering but I know I have a lot to learn. I'm craving for feedback, comments, critiques... Or just a crash course on how using backdrop efficiently. I think a lot of members feels the same way as me.

McNare....don't rise to these idiotic comments, believe me, i know how hard that can be.
Totally relate to what your saying, and it even made me look back on my recent renders to see if i could improve on my BG's & lighting.

@hawkeye : Idiotic comments? Which ones? I think everybody on this thread agreed with McNare. We just want a way to better ourselves too.

There are two in particular that like to put words into peoples mouth that were not there in the first place. Those two know who they are.

Oh yawn. I gave my opinion on what I read into it based on what was said. See that first part? My opinion? I'm entitled to mine, just as much as he's entitled to his and just as much as the next person. As for what you deem idiotic, well frankly, I don't give a rat's ass as it's still my opinion and just as valid.

    Hello, @macanare

Welcome to the site. Trial by fire I guess. I’m sure you didn’t intend to start a virtual pissing match, but this is not the first time we’ve been down this road.

I can acknowledge that being new to Zone doesn’t mean you’re new to 3D. We would love to see some of your work and there is a couple of different places to post it.

Also, could you clarify to me what you mean by a background image? I use IBL pretty frequently, but haven’t loaded a background image into my viewport in probably 10 years. Ironically, I was thinking of doing just that today. In light of recent conversations, I’m working on a Boris Vallejo tribute and was thinking of painting a backdrop, but I was also considering creating an HDRI in that style.

Does your statement relate to both methods?

This comment is made on the OP. I don't understand what you mean by background images. Do you mean like backdrops? If so its easy on one's system to render like that then to have a full-on scene render tho I do prefer to do full scenes as most backdrops look boring.

You havent realized that anything Herecles says is gospel given to him directly in visions straight from Yahweh. Everyone else is a heretic.

I am the way the truth and the light. No one becomes an artist but through me.

The BG image, wether it be HDRI or just a photograph of your garden should dictate the way you light your scene/model. An image is simply a 2d representation of a scene either in daylight, nightlight or studio light...it's that simple. Look at your image, looke where the light is eminating from and try to replicate in your scene to get a convincing image from two entirely different content....if ya get the drift.
I mean for christ sake.....an image is an image, how can you be confused?.

By definition, doesn’t an HDRI “set” the lighting for the scene? That’s what Image Based Lighting means, right?
