This is the last I’ll say on the matter so the thread can run it’s course.
@Legolas18 if people can’t request for say 200 points then they probably won’t wait and go elsewhere. Maybe it makes more sense to allow lower point requests anyway?I‘m now in agreement with what 3Demon said.
Either way - interesting topic.
December 10, 2020 at 10:29 AM #1648852Hello, I would like to intervene by putting forward a few arguments that I think are important and that we should not forget.
- "Let us preserve the spirit of sharing".
- "Let's preserve our human values"I say this because:
- i have the feeling that current trend is towards a soul of capitalism.
Even if this is a matter of fact on this site, some people only wantds to Win and collect Points.
Some already have a considerable amount of points in their reserve, much more than they will ever be able to spend on this site. And in spite of that, they still want to earn even more...- Like Robin Hood, I would like to defend the poor against the rich.
To get points here, you have to either buy them or buy items on the 3D stores to create posts.
These items are often sold at a high price in 3D stores.
Prices that are not often accessible to everyone (we have our own "real life" outside the virtual world with imperatives that already reduce our budget (food, clothing, house and car maintenance, education of our children...).I don't speak for myself (because I really don't have a point problem).
I am speaking on behalf of those who can't afford to buy.
Let's not make 3D, a matter of points that would be reserved for rich people. From a positive point of view:
I have often noticed that among people with a lot of points, there are often generous people who give a lot (2000, 5000 pts and sometimes more.
Congratulations to these people. And I thank, the administrators for changing the ratio 25 - 25 during the purchases). This should encourage to "buy" on this site to help other members and keep the site running.
I would propose 500 to open a request and 250 to participate. (I remember that Anjabear said 100 pts minimum)
It is the duty of each of us not to take advantage of the rule that will be imposed and to give according to our means, let us continue to be generous if we can.
Let's keep a convivial aspect and a spirit of sharing
December 10, 2020 at 11:06 AM #1648863I know @Legolas18, (
you can go anywhere, there will always be people who take advantage, dishonest people and lazy people.
I too have my share of anedoctes of the cheaters I've met on this site.
But should these people be punished, to the detriment of honest people who are not financially well-off?
I know, we can't make an omelette without breaking eggs.
I wasn't aiming at you when talking about capitalisim (it was a global thinking) but I just wanted to draw attention not to set the bar too high.December 10, 2020 at 12:41 PM #1648882A topic covered many times here.
Consider...
- rules say requested items that are shared should make it to the blog within a week-ish
- that means anyone can wait a week and get the item
- that rules is not always followed
- leech sites (there are dozens) that take content from here cost no points
- Hunter must make some money from this place (ad revenue it seems). He's not getting rich running it. Hunter needs eyeballsWith the current ecosystem of 3d modeling pi-ra-C, there really isn't much that can be done except by individual sharers who decide to implement their own rules. If you share something, you can decide who you share it with based on your own criteria. That's about the best anyone can hope for.
December 10, 2020 at 1:53 PM #1648888I think the skewed proportion of uploaders and non-uploaders are the reason for some items not being posted to the blog. I think everybody would like to see that change.
Doing something that promote uploading will benefit everybody and the site. Not just by have more people upload, but also in encouraging people already doing so to keep at it and perhaps raising the frequency.
Points don't hold the same value for everybody, in some cases almost none, it doesn't matter how many points the entry criteria is for a request when someone can have multiple accounts.
Blog post downloads taking a nose dive when stuff hits other sites doesn't help the situation either.
Why not award - reward uploading by giving a badge to an uploader, whether that is from reuploading a dead post or filling a request. Having said badge grants access to create or join requests.December 10, 2020 at 3:19 PM #1648897There was a short-lived thread about how too much points were being offered for requested items and now it's about too few points. When is there going to be balance? This is good conversation and it seems to be an effective idea.

That did for me. I got pissed and stopped sharing here. Came to my senses I guess. It still bothers me, but I've learned to live with it. However, it makes me more reluctant to fill a low-point request (even though I have more than enough points). It's knowing that the majority of points we get now are from the initial filling of requests. It used to be that one would get thousands of points from a good share. Now, other than the initial request, one can expect to see a few hundred or so.
The Zemlon thread from a few months ago captured most of this. It's sticked above if anyone needs a refresher. In the end, everyone settled down and things went back to normal (except sharers now get 25 points/share rather than 20).
December 10, 2020 at 5:24 PM #1648915In the spirit of keeping uploaders active, I'm in favour of raising the minimum point entry for requests.
December 10, 2020 at 5:26 PM #1648916Basically, you can't force anyone to do anything, only create / maintain an environment where public sharing is encouraged.
This is still the site that consistently sources the most recent content.More important IMO, I have noticed a decline in new postings since the 'Christmas Presents' got posted too early & are making the front blog page basically static.
Not good for site traffic!

December 10, 2020 at 7:19 PM #1648962Well, I tried to include some 'best practice' hints in my Request Thread Rules.

December 10, 2020 at 8:51 PM #1648972@legolas18 "If the entry point for making requests is higher, they will either stay on the “posted on the blog items” or start actually sharing items to get points."
Your conclusion is flawed. When points are available for purchase and via daily visits, 'freeloaders' are not required to start actually sharing items.
-----------
I'm merely acting as the Devil's Advocate (apropos a 3Demon). I understand the issue of someone requesting an item without offering any recompense. Personally, I think it's a waste of their effort (IMO relying on the kindness of others is a poor plan), but it's their effort and the effort of whoever chooses to respond.
Ask yourselves, "If there were no points associated with requests or sharing in general, then would I still be as generous with my uploading efforts?" The answer, and the consistent behavior associated with that answer (actions speaking louder than words), should indicate your true commitment whether to share freely or to trade.
I suspect that if you restrict requests in the REQUESTS forum, then perhaps they will just end up in the GENERAL CHAT instead. Pick your poison.
December 10, 2020 at 9:18 PM #1648976All fulfilled publicly requested items should end up on the blog within a week. 🙂
December 10, 2020 at 9:21 PM #1648979Being a KAT refugee, I always feel public sharing is a good end in itself.
I have always had my doubts as to the validity of any points system, but it is what we have, so I work as best I can with it.
December 10, 2020 at 9:23 PM #1648980@legolas18 Don't be afraid. My logic is sound. If your intent is to coerce members to start uploading (which you claim it is) in an effort to accumulate points, yet they can just buy points (at a significantly lower cost than purchasing the actual models), then your plan is flawed. It only works if they have no other options for accumulating points.
December 10, 2020 at 9:33 PM #1648986Indeed it is, but as you quite rightly say, we need those.
It is a case of you can never please all the folk all the time.
We try to strike a balance to please most of the members, & encourage participation.🙂
