That was funny.
I dont always have that kind of time. A nice Pffftzzztt POP and a flash of light does it for me.
June 10, 2023 at 8:06 AM #1982713In addition to the potential security issues, I didn't see mentioned the cost of electricity for both rendering and also for possibly keeping the environment a suitable temperature. In some parts of the world running a few higher end Nvidia GPUs for an extended time on a regular basis can be costly.
June 10, 2023 at 10:37 AM #1982850@bavor , Indeed, the cost of elecricity (if you do it by yourself at home, and it takes 4 hours to make a render is crazy expensive...). That's why I thought it would be optimal to be just seconds if we share the costs and GPU's... But I understand the reluctance to offer an IP to an external server ...
June 11, 2023 at 3:30 AM #1983121What kind of renders are you doing that take 4 hours? Are they 16K resolution? 4K animations?
June 11, 2023 at 11:40 AM #198328450 hours? 😀 http://sciencebehindpixar.org/pipeline/rendering
June 11, 2023 at 9:11 PM #1983483You aren't making Pixar movies, so I ask again, what kind of renders are you doing that take 4 hours(or more) and are crazy expensive with electricity costs? Even with the older computer hardware I had before upgrading, the only thing that took a long time to render were animations. Are you doing long and complex animations? Iray server can't handle animations from some software, including Daz. You have to submit every single frame individually. So that makes it time consuming and complicated to use for animations.
It almost seems that you are pushing for this community to create a render farm so that you(and others) can use the hardware and electricity of other people with minimal cost to yourself. Thus transferring all of the cost onto other people. That's why a render farm won't work here. The people who's hardware and electricity is being used won't receive anything in return and have all of the expenses behind the render farm.
June 11, 2023 at 9:47 PM #1983489How would you make the render fame fair to everyone using it and making it fair to those allowing their hardware to be used by the other users? Would people need to spend points to use it? Would people gain points by allowing their hardware and electricity to be used? Electricity costs vary in different countries. Hardware costs vary in different countries. If you live in an area with low electricity costs, do you have to spend more money to use the render farm because you would be using more expensive electricity elsewhere? If you have low end hardware that contributes basically a minimal value to the render farm, do you have to pay more points to use the render farm?
How do we develop a system of points distribution and management for the render farm or do you expect everyone to contribute for free? What happens if its a handful of people using 70% of the render farm's capacity? How is that fair for the community?
EDIT: Basically people will abuse the render farm without any accountability. If you want a render farm, get together with some friends and do it. If its community wide, it won't be sustainable without a complicated way of "paying" for it or managing the use of it so it doesn't get used constantly used and abused by a very small number of people that contribute nothing.
June 12, 2023 at 8:47 AM #1983608@bavor, I am not going to answer those questions. Almost everyone in the chat knows that, in my opinion, Iray is one of the worst rendering engines... Nvidia sells hardware, not software: thank goodness it offers an SDK... It's not to save me money, nor to gain anything. .. With the shitty GPU that this thing has, I have plenty to make renders with Arnold... I have plenty.
I work in industrial design, and I use laptops: They allow me to use Solidworks (with a paid license...) and move around companies, on site. I don't want a workstation to make 20 second animations for my products. I was thinking of other users, no points, and if you don't want to share your GPU, then don't connect: It's easier than you think..
Pixar, now, can take 20 (+/-) hours to make a frame, since those data are from 2013...
But, since it is not accepted, I consider the thread closed.June 12, 2023 at 11:52 AM #1983709You are talking about setting up a render farm on a site that has mostly Daz assets and Daz uses Iray. Yes Iray isn't the best, but its also the most commonly used here.
That explains it. You want a render farm made using resources here so that you can use it for work instead of paying to use a render farm or similar online service. Its not easier than I think because there is a lot of setup and administration to get it started and to maintain it. You still didn't address the other issues. So I guess you see the flaws in your idea.
I still don't see how you repeatedly brining up Pixar has any relevance at all to the discussion of a render farm for users here. Its completely irrelevant to the discussion.
June 13, 2023 at 6:09 PM #1984222I like the idea to share the GPU (like the idle CPU with Seti@Home) with others.
Anyhow I have no idea how the Iray server works and whether it has been optimized for distributed WAN loads. In a LAN it will likely work quite good as there are no latency and/or bandwidth issues.
Also the amount of required bandwidth might be huge when uploading to 10 Iray servers with 1 GPU vs. uploading to one farm with 10 GPUs.
PS: If the users here had access to a Pixar farm they wouldn't think of their own render farm. 😉
June 13, 2023 at 8:47 PM #1984257If I had access for free or very low cost to a farm like PIXAR, I'd be making full length movies by now. As it is, it takes me about 2-3 hours to do a 1 minute 720p movie which I then use Gigapixel AI to upscale the rendered images to 1080p then convert into a movie.
June 15, 2023 at 11:51 AM #1985081@oldwolf , The problem is not the time, but the "end-line" of delivery: Another thing is that it's for you...
I usually do 1920×1080 videos progressively, but it depends on the job/end-line.
Despite using "Daz" models, I pass them to Alembic (the old plugin, not the Sagan...), and to Cinema4D r19, which reads the HD5F format, and keeps the polygons with their materials (still unassigned...). Then, I pass them to Cinema4D r25/Maya in Alembic Ogawa format.
And, with the pathetic "bridge" of "DazToC4d", I replace the materials... I convert them to Arnold materials, and .... patience. 🙂But the hostilities encountered by "making the IP public", prevent me from developing this for Iray users in an anonymous render-farm... Sorry: It's not my fault...
June 15, 2023 at 12:01 PM #1985086@vanimoch3dx , yes! I´m a user of BOINC, in research from proteins, finding quasars, etc... SETI@home is dead.... I am now in World Community Grid and Eisntein@Home. And the energy cost in electricity is not even going to exceed 3€/$ per month: But I help while I can.
https://boinc.berkeley.edu/June 15, 2023 at 12:13 PM #1985089And I apologize to everyone who has felt offended or doubt the project...
Above all, to those who have a cell phone in their pocket right now, where Whatshapp, Facebook, Twitter, Google, and even PornHub know more about them than they know about themselves. ....
THREAD CLOSED.June 17, 2023 at 4:49 AM #1985824Oh come on. If our IPs are public guess what DAZ, Renderosity, and other sites will do. Yep, go through their logs to try matching our IPs to ban us or even join your "render farm" and use wireshark or similar to see what IPs they are connecting to and do the same. Unless you have a way to completely obfuscate the connections, you risk anyone using this getting banned from content sites.
