I also still have usenet. I'd offer to upload your stuff there, but since very few have it now apparently, I'm not sure what good that would do. There are a few 3D groups on there, but no one uses them. You can still get lots of movies (new and old) and TV shows (new and old) from there. And the 100mb/sec download is great. I pay less than $3/month and it's much more stable than torrents.
September 8, 2026 at 11:14 PM #2187095@ulysses, 3 bucks a month!? Who's your provider?
I think we'd be best to stick with file hosts that we use now, everyone is familiar with how to use it and I don't think we'll see too much 'action'.September 16, 2026 at 10:41 AM #2188121Has anyone given this more thought? After watching RenderState go lifeless for a few days I feel that archiving items has become even more important.
@evangeline?September 16, 2026 at 4:29 PM #2188144WHAY ARE YOU GETTING AT??
September 16, 2026 at 5:07 PM #2188146All of us who are interested in this should decide on...
1) a common naming system for the files.
2) size of each archive.
3) what do we stick in each archive? For example, do we put characters for V4 in one, then all her clothes in another? Does G2 get her own archive or do we combine it with G3 and G8 and....?
There's a LOT of old stuff and if we don't work together on this we'll be duplicating a lot of work and files. We should also publish lists of what's in each archive. A PDF for each one would save people a LOT of searching and stop lots of posts here asking where this or that is.
I think it would be an idea to have all the links in a sticky too.
What do folks think? Lets get organized before we all go off in different directions.
September 17, 2026 at 4:14 AM #2188186personally i prefer a 2 character prefix for the store then SKU number/id (I try to include old ps_* identifiers and IM numbers when both are available) then author name then product name then any part numbers or designators like ds for daz studio only or psr for poser files based. Examples:
Oneman - Realistic toilet from Renderosity =
RO00029893_-_Oneman_-_Realistic_ToiletOdysseon Medical Lab Metadata 1.0 from Daz =
IM00013441_-_Nightshift3D_-_Odysseon_Medical_Lab_Metadata_1.0_DSJim Burton Victoria Night Life Shoe Pack =
IM00000199-ps_ac094_-_Jim_Burton_-_Victoria_Night_Life_Shoe_PackThe Blossom Day for A3 from 3DCommune =

RR00047152_-_Aelsed_-_Hip_Spreader_for_Genesis_2_FemalesSeptember 17, 2026 at 9:32 AM #2188236I was rooting through my archives and found a hair collection for Vicky Four that's 104 GB's!
Argh!September 17, 2026 at 11:04 AM #2188252Take a look at my 'Manual Install' sticky.
The strict file nomenclature I defined there has stood the test of time.
I can still find things quickly despite a vast archive.
If it isn't where I think it should be, or awaiting processing, I don't have it.
🙂
September 17, 2026 at 10:03 PM #2188326Noice! Still reorganizing from old backup discs i needed to read off as the ink and protection layer is flaking off and recoveries from messed up drives but i don't know if i have near that many V4 hairs.
September 17, 2026 at 10:09 PM #2188328@cantonesejim, I'd have to split that into 3 pieces for Mega. I have another collection (please don't ask) that's almost half a terabyte and am wondering how to share it to a few folks. I keep looking at SFTP. From what I'm reading it's quite secure.
September 18, 2026 at 3:34 AM #2188364if you want to go torrent, let me know and I'll help seed. If you use BiglyBT, you can make an i2p/tor torrent with distributed DHT tracking so you don't have to worry about trackers.
September 18, 2026 at 9:23 AM #2188397Hello, Eelgoo's system is very good, it covers a lot of bases. I came up with something similar on my own, although less developed. If only I had read his posts before building my library...
Best regards,
September 18, 2026 at 11:30 AM #2188415@cantonesejim,
I've used Tixati for ages but will look into 'BiglyBT.
An ancient protocol that still works like gangbusters is eMule.
https://www.emule-project.com/home/perl/general.cgi?l=1
It's always been rock solid for me, uses little overhead, and the community is still developing it. Because it's somewhat obscure, it seems that copyright holders ignore it too.
Something like this might be best for sharing older item archives since I don't imagine that they'll see much traffic, as opposed to the latest items. There's also the juggernaut (or cancer) of AI dragging folks away from 3D in general. We may become a niche hobby.September 18, 2026 at 12:45 PM #2188429I think we always were! 🙂
September 19, 2026 at 5:17 AM #2188513If you go down the torrent route I've got a hardly used torrentbox that I could add to the list to keep things alive.
