    OK, so I have a question because obviously the internet and most humans suck and are stupid dumbasses.
    I need a hard drive for my desk top computer. I need it to be a boot drive. I need it to run at 7200rpm. I would like it most preferably to be a WD (western digital) HD. I need it to be at least 2 TB but 1 TB may suffice.

    That being said, I investigated and, those that I found that run at 7200, people say that those are actually WD Greens and not made for boots drives, only storage. That Blue or black are for boot drives. But all the blue or blacks I've seen run at 5400 and are said to be for storage only. That HDs that run at 7200 are made for booting.. See the confusion dilemma?

    I was looking at a couple 1-2 TB VR ready WD HDs that say run at 7200.

    I need the boot and the speed. I'm currently running off my WD portable 2 TB HD which is NOT made for being a boot drive, because my original internal died a year ago.

    Suggestions? Input? Correct information?

    I haven't shopped these in a while, but 7200 rpm is 7200 rpm. You can research to see what the read/write speeds are.
    If you want lots of speed, a SSD would do that, and almost any brand. Obviously that's a lot more expensive, but nothing beats a SSD as a boot drive (maybe M.2 but that's getting even more pricey.) I have a 512 GB SSD for my boot drive that houses my most used programs and games. I have larger external/internal drives to store the bulk of data storage.
    Yes, SSD is worth it over 7200 speeds, IMO. My PC boots in about 8 seconds, if that.

    I think that's the way to go. Your movies and Daz/Poser runtime are not going to benefit from ultra fast access times. The OS, some video games, and some software will. So plan accordingly. You can grab a 512 GB SSD for OS and stuff, and use your current external for the big bulky data. You will be happy with the best of both worlds.

    @arthurgarcia Thanks. I didn't even know there WAS a Gold. Definitely a possible.

    @bamboozler90
    I wish I could afford a SSD.

    The problem with finding a 7200 HDD, is that people say the packaging says its 7200 and then they get it home and its actually 5400. And if they contact the manufacturer, then they get a song and dance about it being a 5400 but comparable to a 7200. I'm like, WTF? Then others say its 7200.

    I agree with @Bamboozler90. You'd be surprised how much SSD prices have fallen since initial introduction. There's even NVME that I didn't know was reasonable until @locololo showed me his receipt for one.

    @Dragon:
    *why* are you looking into a mech drive for your boot device?!
    In today's world this makes little to no sense.
    You should be focused on finding a suitable SSD, i.e. fits your OS +50% of that size on a budged you can handle... and SSD is not at all "expensive" anymore.
    Even your Docs (supplementary) drive ought to be SSD, really, wean yourself from teh legacy HDD monster. I have a CRATE full of HDD's I have stored on, and gradually, eventually lost to mech failure. In the same timeframe, I have NEVER lost a single flash/SSD drive.
    Every HDD will die in your lifetime, and especially in the next 3-5 years. Your SSDs will outlive you.

    SO, really, the best experience is a Solid State, around 120 ~ 240 GB for a boot drive. I have an intel speed demon, and windows boots from cold start in around 10 seconds. I have 750 GB SSD for daz library and two 500 SSD GB for oculus, steam and other fast access games or apps (Unity, Adobe), and 2 other 120 GB SSD, just because i had 8 ports to fill up, and three 3 terabyte 7200 spinning disks.

    Also, Page file on one of the solid states, never on spinning. Spinning should only be for slow stuff, like archives, downloads etc... prices have dropped a lot and will drop again this summer.

    You can also get the 10,000 RPM drives.

    But if you really want speed, size and cost savings, go hybrid.
    Seagate FireCuda 2 TB Internal Hybrid Drive - 3.5" - ST2000DX002 - SATA 6Gb/s
    (from description)

    So the hybrid drives use some sort of algorithm to place priority files, frequently accessed, and most recently accessed files on an on board SSD Cache.

    Enjoy blazing speeds with this Seagate FireCuda solid-state hybrid drive. It's made specifically for gaming, so it boots quicker, loads applications more rapidly and responds up to five times faster than standard 7200 rpm drives. This Seagate FireCuda solid-state hybrid drive holds up to 2TB of files, and it's just as useful for creative professionals as it is for gamers.

    @Amberkat, @Aftyrbyrn and @Arthurgarcia are right about SSD and prices falling:

    Bestbuy does have the Sandisk ultra for the following prices:

    https://www.bestbuy.com/site/sandisk-ultra-512gb-internal-sata-solid-state-drive-for-laptops/5969506.p?skuId=5969506 for $119

    https://www.bestbuy.com/site/sandisk-ultra-1tb-internal-sata-solid-state-drive-for-laptops/5969508.p?skuId=5969508 for $229

    Tha'ts better than black friday prices.

    SSD prices are falling. For a boot drive an SSD makes a world of difference even in older computers. I personally like the Samsung EVO drives.

    If your looking for a great mech drive HGST would be a good (best) bet. They are owned by WD. HGST drives have benchmarked faster, and come with longer warranties, and even data recovery (last I checked).

    WD Gold is WD's top series, but my understanding is that Gold drives simply offer the design to be used for anything/everything. In other words they are a "Black" a "Red" and a "Purple" all in one. speed, reliability, and stamina. Blue are economy, and green are energy wise (and I thought discontinued because all WD drives are energy wise now?)

    I don't live in the US, but some of those prices seem high for prices in USD, by about 10%. Maybe I passed up some really good sales a few weeks back.

    You can get 250 GB SSDs for less than $50 now. If money is a concern, that'll do.

    A 7200 RPM drive will not be all that much faster than a 5400 anyway. You'll notice a little difference, but you will wish you had gone for a SSD. After putting a SSD in mine, I don't ever want to go back. And I was hesitant about buying one, just like you are right now. I promise you, you will be happier with SSD. You will feel like you just bought a whole new computer. It is that dramatic, and especially in your case working with a slow external. You will be doing back flips.

    SSDs can also work great for virtual memory like mentioned above. Your entire PC will benefit from using SSD. They are also dead quiet. And yes, mechanical drives can fail, as you already know, that's why you are here in the situation you are in right now. An SSD can last a real long time, though they are not full proof. They can still fail, too, just much less likely.

    @amberkat damn.. don't bite my tail off. I'm an old Dragon just trying to replace what was in my 4 year desktop while living on SSDI. LOL
    I'm not up to date on all the new gizmos and gadgets anymore. I buy stuff that lasts me awhile so I don't have to replace crap every month. I haven't built my own PC in over 10 years. I just learned of SSDs last year.
    Thank you for the info. I've no experience with SSDs so never knew the lifespan verses HDD.
    I'm looking for both boot and storage. With all my movies and art files I eat a crap load of space quickly. But now I have more info which I appreciate.

    @aftyrbyrn
    yeah well, my monitor is 47". LOL
    OK, thats the LOWEST price I've ever seen for SSD. And for 2TB, thats a steal AND affordable.. Thank you for that. I think I've only had one Seagate, and it didn't last long. Thats why I was asking about WD. But I've never used an SSD.

    @locololo
    Thanks. Those are for laptops. I have a desktop.

    @tucker
    I'm a Samsung patron for life. If they made a Truck, I'd buy it. LOL.. But right now they are a little pricey.

    I think that, after all the awesome feedback by everyone AND @aftyrbyrn s link for the Seagate hybrid, I think I'm going to go for that since its the size and price, and according to you all, an SSD with the reliability and speed, that I'm looking for.
    Taking the plunge. I'm weaning @amberkat. I'm weaning. LOL

    @bamboozler90 Thank you. I'm thinking of it like updating to a crystal shard. But yes. Without having any experience with SSDs, I was hesitant. But y'all are adamant about them. Not a single naysayer. LOL

    Oh great @Drgnmztr, you're so adorable. You can put them in a desktop as no additional power supply required. And they run so much cooler and less noisy. Very energy effecient. if you don't have an adapter, you can usually find one or just let it attach with 2 screws somewhere. Alright. Nice to see you are upgrading whatever machine you are using. Thank you for asking this question.
