When I started in Daz, not knowing anything about the model and generational differences, I started with V4, because all the free and pirated shit I was finding was for V4, so I assumed it was the top model. I had done some foot fetish stuff starting out to try and learn the program.
Well, I was posing the V8's feet the other day, and I suddenly remembered some of the stuff I did starting out... and it occurred to me that the feet, for some reason, looked better on V4 in 3Delight than they do on V8 in iRay...
...which got me to downloading some V4 maps and looking at the soles and other fine details.
So, the point I'm getting to, is what happened to the photorealism and detail? It seems to me that more work was put into the maps of the early generations that is being put into the newer, more expensive models... any reason for that? Are there any good V4 maps in a large resolution? Because I'm considering just mapping my G- and V-8s with V4 maps from now on...March 19, 2018 at 1:57 AM #537707Agreed, V4 had much more appealing maps. How are you mapping the V4 to G8? I had tried, but gave up.
March 19, 2018 at 2:06 AM #537713I downloaded the v4 to v8 legacy map converter, but I don't understand it, the instructions seem vague, and none of the maps I load into it appear to work with it.
So, for my one experiment, I loaded V8 HD, went into the surface options for each body part and manually replaced the maps... (I had to find them in their directory first, which was a pain in the ass with my volume of content)
March 19, 2018 at 2:17 AM #537727ive considered doing a few V4 to V8.
what software does this relatively easy?March 19, 2018 at 2:26 AM #537732I wish I knew.
March 19, 2018 at 3:54 AM #537793Silly question, but have you tried just applying the v4 maps straight to v8 and seeing what happens ?
March 19, 2018 at 5:17 AM #537858Maybe once; I think nothing happened at all, like applying eyeball maps to a shirt, but I may try it once more in the future.

I've found that when using the following item the automatic process does not want to work.
Legacy UVs for Genesis 8: Victoria 4
https://www.daz3d.com/legacy-uvs-for-genesis-8-victoria-4However... Here's how to make it work...
(It also works for the other products in the range for Genesis 8)1 - Load your figure
2 - Maunally load the 'Legacy UVs Geografts' from the Components folder
3 - Click the button called 'Legacy UVs Start Materials' (Your figure should turn white)
4 - Load your V4, V5, G2 textures etc. (Load all textures you wish to use)
5 - Click the button called 'Legacy UVs - Apply Victoria4 UVs (Or other Gen as needed)Done! Your figure should now be wearing the textures you want 🙂

That isn't working for me, either.
March 20, 2018 at 5:10 AM #539004The step that's missing is you first need to take your V4 skin and save it as a DUF. aka Save As Material and place it under Presets\Material or where ever you want to put it, just remember where you put it.
Now, load your V8. follow Tomsk's steps but for the part where you load the skin to the figure. At this point go to where ever you saved the Material setting of the v4 figure. it will load but look like a mess. Now go back to Tomsk's steps and Apply UV. This will close out and set up v8 to wear the v4 skin.
March 20, 2018 at 7:01 AM #539075Still not getting it... The skin maps are separate files; how do I get from those jpgs to a duf file?
March 20, 2018 at 8:44 AM #539152I'll take a stab at this... Load v4 with the material preset you want, then create a new preset material somewhere you can find it in the library tree, that will save it as a duf with the v4 UV as well. Apply that material to your geo graft? I'll try later... much later. Currently working on learning emissive lights, i finally got a real sun.
March 20, 2018 at 9:49 AM #539209Thanks, guys! The eyes are all weird and milked over, but otherwise a success!
This is a good illustration of why Daz content creators tend to frustrate me: So often a product remains on the market that either doesn't work, has been mis-cataloged, or is missing essential files altogether. And many of them have vague to non-existent instructions.
EDITED:
It appears I spoke too soon... always render first, ay??

I made a slight error in my above explanation.
Setp 3 should have read as the following, apologies for the mistake!
3 – Click the button called ‘Legacy UVs Start Materials’ (Your figure should turn white)Using my method above here's a quick spot render I just did using Aiko 8, with Yuka head/body morphs, and P3D's Meilan for V4 textures. Rendered in 3delight.
The textures were loaded directly from my Poser Runtime within Daz with no need to convert them to a material preset first.

Click for windowed view or right click for Full Size😀

Thanks for clarifying. Still not having much luck... but thennn
are you rendering in 3Delight for speed for your example, or does this sort of thing not work wit iRay?
I ask because when I originally just tried changing the surface maps manually to V4 maps, but added Normal maps and translucency and rendered in iRay, I ran into that problem I had last month with the figure making the image transparent... And then when I followed yours and Aftyr Byrn's instructions, all appeared well, but as you can see above, it all went to shit when I shaded and rendered for iRay.... -
