It seems that Daz is now allowing vendors to sell stolen content just like RenderHub. Sade pointed this out in the Daz forums and saw the posts deleted and the thread railroaded to another subject with Haseltine saying they'd 'investigate'. The whole thing is detailed in our Discord server.
If I had any guilt over pirating Daz stuff, I don't anymore.May 10, 2024 at 1:22 PM #2074269DAZ is selling stolen content for 20+ years.
Remember their "High Fantasy Project"?
https://www.daz3d.com/high-fantasy-propsI don't think the Tolkien estate ever saw a single penny for that.
*
Then there are all the cars and other real world meshes, all sold without proper licensing.
*
I think they are now selling meshes resp. clothing directly lifted from licensed games?
Well, that is of course TECHNICALLY on another level, but giving all the "auto-remeshing" apps available now, not as easy to proof. But ETHICALLY, it's pretty much the same. The original IP holder is ripped off, doesn't matter if an original mesh was merely "inspired" or directly copied from a game.
(Not talking about fan art, here, of course)*
So, in the end...
They pirate, I pirate...Take what you can, give nothing back!
😛
May 10, 2024 at 1:25 PM #2074271might as well start contacting the IP holders like we did with RenderHub
May 10, 2024 at 2:18 PM #2074277Here on this site, in this place we are complaining about stealing.
Mother used to have an expression "like the pot calling the kettle black"
Think:
We complain and shut down Render Hub'
We complain and shut down DazWho the hell is left to steal from?
Each other?
May 10, 2024 at 3:36 PM #2074286Really doesn't bother me that a billion dollar IP may lose a little bit of cash from a few fans milking it. Just change the name and alter it slightly. Doesn't take a huge effort to call a lightsaber a glowstick.
It doesn't both me that people share online since most probably wouldn't buy it anyway or drastically limit what they did buy. There 0 chance I'd buy 5% of what I actually downloaded and use even less. I also don't sell any of my renders. If I did I'll buy whatever product I use in a commission.
What bothers me is taking another persons work and saying its yours and selling it. Ripping a model from a game then selling it as your work is as low as you can go.
Almost every movie I like I have an original hard copy. The few I don't are out of print or they won't print it. For some reason I feel I need a hard copy. Same with games but that's almost nonexistent now. I guess I don't feel the same loyalty to Daz for some reason.
May 10, 2024 at 5:00 PM #2074295DAZ has always done it, but they insulate themselves by turning to the DMCA, where they claim that if there is something infringing that's uploaded by a PA or other third party, let them know and they'll remove it.
Now, if they're selling DAZ Original/in-house items that infringe on IP, then that's a new thing.
Kazaa is a name I have not seen in a very, very long time (Deluge is my privateering vessel of choice these days.)

Same story here. I buy it on DVD/BluRay if I love it, and I have a lot of discs. Games are the same, but you're right - most of those are DRM-laden downloads these days.
May 10, 2024 at 5:45 PM #2074303Sad story.
Over the course of more than twenty years I would rent dvd from netflix......
and copy them.
When the change came to Blu ray I would copy them also using different software.
I have over 4000 movies,,,,,bought and stolen
Some of the older ones are worth their weight in gold.
A few months ago Netflix shut down their rental division.
Now I have to buy or hope Youtube has them.
BUY?May 10, 2024 at 7:20 PM #2074317I dont consider it taking money from the IP holders when DAZ and the others release this stuff, because the IP holders themselves are not releasing anything similar in this format.
Unlike movies and games, the IP holders *DO* release their own product in that format, obviously, and so anyone distributing anything that competes with those releases *DOES* take away from the IP holders.
This is just my opinion how i feel (regardless of how any court would consider it). If someone wants to make some bucks on something that the IP holder is not doing, and has no intention of doing, I dont see it as competing with them and stealing from them. They probably dont see enough profit in doing it, and is "probably" why they dont go after the people doing it. The cost of doing so compared to what they are making from it is probably not worth the hassle.
May 10, 2024 at 7:29 PM #2074319Also, the IP holders might actually consider it "advertising" of their own properties. Its a trade-off, if they had run paid ads to keep interest in their products vs not paying for ads, getting advertisement anyway (via product visibilty), and the third party gets paid for sales (which would have been the money spent on ads if they chose paying for ads). So either way, the end result is the same.
May 10, 2024 at 7:45 PM #2074323I love the way we rationalize theft.....now we are doing them a favor.
I just went down the rabbit holeMay 10, 2024 at 9:32 PM #2074343what kind of stuff specifically is being refered to?
May 10, 2024 at 10:25 PM #2074346It seems that someone had bought something from Artstation and was selling it on Daz as their own creation.
Daz seems to be under the delusion that folks only shop there. They are obviously completely unaware of the many other places where people sell Daz items.May 12, 2024 at 12:06 AM #2074492Its a stretch but if I share something no pirate would buy and a person sees it in art somewhere and likes it enough to buy it, it is free advertising. Or a pirate buys it to get points they wouldnt have brought it if no points were offered. Sure its a bit of BS but not totally without some truth.
Ive brought more stuff to share than Ive brought for personal use.May 15, 2024 at 11:42 AM #2074973If you are using windoze, the OS was stolen from the Mac who stole if from Zerox. The Brits made their fortune from privateers stealing gold from the Spanish who stole it from the Aztecs. So the lesson is that if you steal a little you are a thief. If you get get others to steal a lot you are a businessman.
