Unrendered Minus VDB because that would just show up as a mess:

This one was one of the most difficult renders I've done. Difficulty doesn't always equal superior though. 😛 Anyway, I thought I would share it with my ZG fam.

I would really like @d0gg0d for some hard-hitting truth. Also.. @frank22 look I used my avatar. Do I win the competition?

If you are interested in entering a contest for a total in over 300k in points, please visit this link:

300,000.00+ (Total) Halloween Artistic Render Contest

If you have any questions regarding the render feel free to ask.

I really like the silhouette style of image 2 for it's originality. Because the light is behind him, you can't really see the freak's face, and if you add more light you're going to spoil the silhouette figures, maybe. It will be interesting to see how you incorporate Reallogo into the image.
And yeh, I'll enter the comp.... plenty of time left.

@frank22 Thanks for entering. I thought it would be a dead competition.

As for the silhouette. Through trail and error I discovered if you add a geometry shell to anything. You can then add emission (white) + make the:

luminance = 1 and luminance units = watts (don't know if that matters) and make luminous efficacy = -1

You basically suck all light (or reverse depending on what you equate to absence of light) out the the thing encapsulation the geometry shell. I discovered it when messing with another render but wasn't sure it would work on characters too. BUT IT DID! 🙂

If you make luminance or luminous efficacy any less than 1 / -1 it will absorb all light in the scene, so don't make that mistake.

I thought you added those figures in postwork but it appears more complicated than that. A nice technical discovery I knew nothing about previously.
As for "dead competition", you've been around long enough to know most people are very slow to submit their entries, often leaving it to the last few days/hours. We've had a few back-to-back contests lately but I wouldn't worry about art fatigue. I for one love the comps. and lots of others do too.

    @frank22

Believe it or not, I've never actually entered a art contest or.. pretty much any other online contest. For that matter I've never actually been invested in them in any capacity. So I don't really know how they work as far as if/when submissions occur.

I remember back in the day tomsk used to always invite me because I guess he thought my renders were good. BTW.. I miss that dude. But back to the point, I never entered one.

Anyway yeah, you've been around long enough, you should know I'm all about rendering 100% in engine. 😛

    Take care!

It reminds me a lot of the Fantasia Demon sequence maybe even LotR.

Just to my perception it looks like the ground is slightly blurred under the figures and merges the DOF creating a flat back round. This may not be the case but it's how my brain is interpreting it.

I like the color of the sky in the first image but it probably wouldn't mix well with the darkened foreground second image.

Overall, I like Fantasia and I like the image. BUT, there's always a but... I dont like the pumpkins. This is probably the look you were going for but it messes with me. It looks like the owner took colored paper and glued the faces on. There isn't depth to the cut outs and little to no light emitting from them. It does fit the theme though it may just be my personal hang-up.

Just my opinion not always truth but, it may be truth in sometimes.
Truth is that you'll be missed.

I agree with everything you say except the flat background.

Right before I did a final render I added an iray shader preset 'uber subsurface' to all surfaces because some of the assets were poser or *gasp* set for 3delight. Then I saved right after.

As usual it was a mistake and plus I forgot to change all resolution subdivision from basic to high resolution and amp up the sub-d levels.

That is why the pumpkins look pixelated and shitty but I probably should have changed the emission levels higher too.

The sky.. that I don't understand. I think it might be the moon plane in front of it. I think the back of the moon plane which didn't have a surface on it was sucking the light from the sky plane.

After about 15 renders, I finally just settled with this one but HONESTLY, I am always happy to receive critique. It helps me improve.

As for that LoTR segment. I see what they did there. They placed a burlap 'bag' in front of the camera, of a live action sequence, to give it that silhouette style visual. Pretty nifty trick.

-Also I hate the cobwebs. They are too bright, thick, and very non-shiny. If I go back and spend about 45 more minutes I could fix it all up; But this was just to promote the contest I'm hosting, not a contest I'm entering. 😛

Reminds me of the title sequence of this film-

    @frank22

That reminds me of this one time I tried to create a flip book version of Little Red Riding Hood via DazStudio. I was going to have 'cut-out' figures and use conveyor belts to build the forest in layers.

Turns out you can't create a functioning conveyor belt in daz studio. Even the great MCasual can't do it. He was able to create a treadmill which is the same basic function but he did it by tricking the eye into thinking the tread was rotating a complete 360, when in actuality, it only turned one tread-mark and then reset back to it's original rotation.

While a neat trick it wouldn't have worked for my project.

Great show/movie. A Series of Unfortunate Events.

"I agree with everything you say except the flat background."

Yeah, I wasn't sure totally about that since my eyes aren't what they use to be. Sometimes I like starting my observations with "to me", "for me" etc. since I'm not always sure what I'm seeing is what others see. Glasses would probably fix that, but I hate wearing them. At one time I wanted to invest in a high-quality monitor and get it color corrected. I was wasting money in photography and eventually I decided it wasn't worth it. So long as I had the original RAW file, I could do whatever I wanted pretty much anytime.

Lets not forget this one @Frank22
