Light noob here so bear with me. In this product https://zonegfx.com/iray-ghost-light-kit-3/ there is a sphere ghost light. What is the advantage and disadvantage of using this instead of a point light? I assume there must be a difference such that the PA of this seemingly very popular product felt the need to include one.
February 18, 2022 at 11:26 AM #1777736the light source itself doesn’t appear in the camera
Did they fix that issue with Ghost Lights? I actually never used them but if I recall starting in one of the 4.15 betas the new iray made them appear anyway and people on the daz forums were trying all sorts of workarounds. I am just now installing DAZ 4.20 in a new folder so I dont mess up my 4.16 install so maybe they fixed it as there's a new update to iray as well.

Doesn't a point light also not appear in the camera?
So the bigger surface of a sphere ghost light allows it to give out softer shadows which makes sense, so what is the usage case for a point light then?
I read on Daz forum that ghost light or any mesh light is not specular light so you shouldn't use it to light characters. However the Ghost Light Kit 3 description says its lights are specular. I don't know what all these mean.
February 18, 2022 at 11:38 AM #1777741@Oldwolf - Is that the lights of ghost lights not appearing in shaded texture preview? I found it to be an annoyance of using ghost light but then again the shaded texture preview shadows of "real" lights are not that useful either.
February 18, 2022 at 11:42 AM #1777747If I recall they were appearing in full renders.
February 18, 2022 at 8:08 PM #1777910If they haven't fixed the ghost light issue, and I mean "fixed" rather than some half-arsed workaround, then I'm staying with ver 5.15.02 until they do. I rely on these lights for most of my scenes.
As for dForce in the new Beta, mentioned by Luca here, it works fine for me in my current DS version. dForce speed seems dependent on GPU. I never have to wait more than 30-40 secs for cloth to simulate.February 18, 2022 at 9:06 PM #1777927The previous ghostlights relied on an iray "bug" that has been "fixed" and there is no way they will ever work unchanged in the new DS versions.
There is a free script to adapt them https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/548061/iray-ghost-light-fix-dse-for-daz-studio-4-20-o-later
Alternatively Sickleyield has published a new product to provide ghostlights in the new DS versions "invisilights" https://www.daz3d.com/sy-invisilights-iray
This asset has briefly appeared in the request forum here a couple of months ago and has been rapidly fulfilled by GMGFX, but nobody took the time to post it... Sad.February 18, 2022 at 11:04 PM #1777948I know the Ghost Light issue is due to Nvidia but could I update DS without updating the Nvidia drivers? Would the latest DS version work with the old drivers?

Definitely not. It is not a matter of drivers, but the implementation of iray that is embedded in DS.
There is even an offical annouce by Kindred that he/she has removed (temporarily) his/her ghost lights from the store until they are upgraded https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/551301/ghost-lights-what-s-happening-and-what-s-nextFebruary 18, 2022 at 11:55 PM #1777959Thanks Niala.
