I see some people convert G3 and even G2 characters and bundles to Genesis 8, but who is the brave soul that will take on the challenge to convert M4 and V4 characters and clothes to Genesis 8? I think M4 and V4 has some of the best designs in terms of clothes and characters, so I am sad to see them fade away.
November 2, 2021 at 4:12 AM #1745180You would have to be extremely specific if you expect someone to dive into that rabbit hole. It isn't difficult, by any stretch of the imagination. However, what I may find as worthwhile as a Gen 4 product, you may not...and there is a $h!tton of product to go through. Most of the product has been redone for more current figures and the quality HIGHLY superior.
November 2, 2021 at 12:08 PM #1745231Quality of the skin maybe, the overall morphs are far inferior to the M4/V4 versions in my honest opinion. They reached their peak then.
Here's just some examples of very good morphs of celebrities:
Evangeline Lilly:

Kate Beckinsale:
November 2, 2021 at 1:30 PM #1745239The biggest jump is from V4/M4 to the Genesis series.
I moved a couple of characters up into Genesis, but I did it the hard way - I exported the V4 as .obj, exported the Genesis(3) as an .obj, then used 3DS Max to bring the two as close together shape-wise as possible, bringing the G3F .obj back into DAZ Studio as a set of morphs. The rest (Genesis 3 - G8) was fairly easy to do.
Nowadays, you don't have to go that crazy... just get and learn RDS Wrap (this thing: https://zonegfx.com/r3ds-wrap-3-3-17/ ), and let it do some of the work for you (Caution: I haven't tried it yet, but I want to when time permits - I'm just going off of what artists like Shinteo @ Pixiv have done with the application - he uses it to convert game meshes to G8F/M.)
The textures are going to take a bit of work, but with Blacksmith3D, it's not too bad. A decent tutorial is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jr7dAJ1tFUw
November 2, 2021 at 3:22 PM #1745258I tried twice with 2 different programs and really didn't get the results I wanted. So I removed them and my V4 content. Rarely used it anyway but I think opening up V4 options is more of a bonus than a hindrance. Especially since people want to post conversions for points and IMHO Vicky is the only conversions worth posting. It took me few hours to batch convert all my G2-3 Hair and Clothing I intend to use. Simple as click the file and walk away. Thanks to script. Even then I sometimes get better results just fitting it by hand. I'm to lazy to go through all the genesis characters I want to convert so I guess there is a reason for others to do the converting for other lazy people like me.
Characters like this

November 3, 2021 at 1:28 AM #1745364I took a look at R3DS Wrap but the process was incredibly convoluted. Didn't understand what they were talking about.

Yup those were a favorite of mine.
Some others have some gems as well

November 3, 2021 at 6:16 PM #1745537Yes, there are some very nice morphs & textures from a few quality vendors for V4.
Conversion to G8F direct via script in one hit, is yet to appear & at this point I doubt it will.
The trouble with stepped conversion, is that morph integrity is compromised somewhat at every iteration. :0/
The old Blacksmith Texture Transformer did an OK job of converting the skins over.

It's the same conundrum you get when you take a letter or B&W picture, and run it through an old Xerox machine... then you run that copy through the same machine, and then take that newest copy and run it through in turn... fidelity does tend to suffer.
The reason why is actually pretty straightforward: You're not doing a perfect match of vertex position to vertex position, because the two meshes have different vert coordinate sets - even between the Genesis mesh generations. This is further compounded by the fact that when weight-mapping and SubD get thrown into the mix, the shape is almost guaranteed to come out subtly different with each transfer. Your best hope is that the shape stays close enough to still resemble what you originally had.
All of this is why you probably want to do a straight conversion from V4 to G8 (or at least minimize it by doing V4 -> G3 -> G8), to skip as many of those little compromises and positional tolerance shifts as possible.
