I am running out of space on my PC, and have an external Hard drive with 5tb of space, if i copied my daz files to the external hardrive, would it open from there if i deleted the files from My Internal hard drive.
Any advice is welcome.
Thank you in advanceOctober 28, 2021 at 4:48 PM #1744147You mean, move you Daz Library there?
It would work, but depending on the speed of the interface, it could be too slow to be usable. SATA has much more bandwidth than USB 3, which in theory could sustain close to 4.8 Gb/s but in reality is much less than that. IMHO, it would not be usable.
Thunderbolt would do much better but is usually not available in the PC world.
eSATA would probably be the best but your external drive (enclosure) would need to support it, and you would also need an eSATA port on your PC.
So unless the 3rd option is available to you, upgrading your internal HD to a larger one (or adding another HD) is probably a better option.
October 28, 2021 at 6:13 PM #1744160Better, use a SSD HD device for a external USB. But, the limit of usb is the driver... 2 or 3.. but is a USB! The transfer rate is limited. I have two copies, one external for backup, on the internal.. (But, you have a library like..., 1Tb, better clean your unused assets!) ¿really you need 2000 panties for a G8F? 😀

Me: Yes!!
😂
October 28, 2021 at 9:03 PM #1744180A few things - I have my library on a USB3.1 external and it works just as fast to when I had it on a HDD. In fact the HDD use to go to sleep and would take 4-5 seconds to spin up whenever I tried to add something to a scene or change a pose etc.
Render speed is the same regardless of SDD or HDD because when the textures are loaded it doesn't matter from then on where the files are stored.
I noticed that saving scenes and some other DS operations were much faster after I went from DDR3 to DDR4 (same 32GB), or it may have been the newer I7 or MB I got at the same time.
Be aware the there will probably be a problem with loading old scenes after you move your library because the paths will be broken when DS tries to load them.
The biggest advantage with keeping your runtime library (and content) off your sys HD is that if your PC becomes inoperable you won't lose everything.October 28, 2021 at 9:09 PM #1744182Exactly. I always have a small SSD for the OS.
Everything else is stored on large subsidiary drives & backed up.
I always have 'My Library' in a remote location from DS to facilitate upgrading DS without having to re-install content.

October 29, 2021 at 3:52 AM #1744216How many panties do you need for G8F? Is there ever enough???

All of them.
As for space, believe it or not you can get by with a slower connection, but be prepared for longer load times. Once it loads, things should behave normally. It helps to get an external SSD drive and make sure you have the fastest USB bus (USB 3.1) - A Samsung T5 external drive over USB 3.1 will definitely do a great job of easing the load-time pain. If you have a Thunderbolt connection, even better.
If you have a desktop, a PCIe extender/adapter and an external PCIe HDD will definitely make things easier to deal with, and give you native disk transfer speeds.

Ditto, though the primary OS drive and secondary data drive are both PCIe. The separation allows not only upgrades, but if I get a new laptop, I can (and have done once already) transplant the secondary disk from old to new and not have to sit around waiting for 2TB of stuff to transfer over a wire (plus I save a lot of money by not having to buy that second disk when I order the laptop).
