A couple of tips maybe :
Make the lights overly bright to help Iray out, then lock down the Aperture/Tone Mapping in render settings to get the right exposure.
Render in layers: Split everything that doesn't interact into seperate renders then combine in post. This also has the benefit of giving you lots of options to tweak things really fast after all the render grunt work has been done.
