Okay, after reading through all 23 pages of comments here, I still don't fully understand what is happening or why, but I get the general drift they're trying to encourage more participation? Or is that completely off?
That in mind, I thought I'd contribute by re-posting some dead links. Have to say, that was an absolute shit-show and I can see why people avoid it.
Finding dead links is awful. 58 pages of items, no filters. I have a lot of Daz assets to re-post, but I can't filter for Daz only. Knowing when they were originally posted would be helpful for me to check if I have anything. Nope, just a big list of posts, no other info.
Okay, I found a couple of posts I have assets for. Should be pretty simply to re-post with the new link right? Nope. That's a whole new post from scratch. Surely a one-click copy button could be added to dead posts, where you can just update the link?
Cool, that was a lot of work, but it's done now. Nope. Apparently 2 of my links were already re-posted. Go knows where, they were still dead links when I first posted. What am I supposed to do about that? God knows. Search apparently, but I thought we were replacing dead links?
Now, one post left, nope, that's reported as a dead link now as well. Mega have received a DCMA hit against it, so, yeah, it's a dead link. But once again, what am I supposed to do about that? God knows. Apparently I'm going to lose 200 points now because of that. Or I need to upload it again, which will almost certainly get taken down straight away. So, fuck me I guess?
Anyway, point to all of this is, if we're trying to encourage participation, make it easier to participate! My experience trying to help has been awful, and I see no reason to try again, in fact, it seems like I'll be worse off after this.
Isn't that entirely the point though? Someone shares it initially, but for some reason they don't want to share it widely, so that inital small share then enables others to share it as well, leading to it being more widely available (and hopefully publicly available)?
It is because the folks who are filling them do not want to publicly release them, thus they never get to the main blog. There are many different reasons for this, each different per filler. Some only share with others who also share, and some just want to do private shares, some want to remain anonymous, and probably many other reasons. This results in them never getting to the blog. The site does encourage people to do blog posts, but it is in no way required.
That doesn't make sense though, anyone and everyone who puts points towards a request gets the request when it's filled. Why not just have it available for anyone afterwards the same way? No need to put anyone's name to it, should be entirely anonymous really.
I like the new request system, it's much easier to see what has been requested and jump on that. Unfortunately it doesn't fix the post-request black hole. Seems like things don't make it to the main blog for some reason, and people are just left wondering what to do next. It would be good if you could just pay to unlock the link like every other post, with the filled requests.
