As the title says.
With a price tag that wants you to sell a kidney, will you be buying a new Nvidia RTX GPU when they hit the stores? Or would you prefer to grab a 10 series card when the prices drop?
I've noticed prices are rising in many places as retailers look to cash in on 10 series cards, while some have cut their prices to make way for the new RTX range.
Me, I'm sticking with the 10 series and might skip the new GPU's altogether.
If you're an avid gamer the price tag shouldn't bother you, but if you're into 3d as a hobby it might be complete overkill unless you can make money from your work.September 15, 2018 at 1:29 AM #761193I just bought a 1070 used for €250, (under half of new for the same card here), and am not gonna bother with the 20-series at all. First of all, still no news of when DAZ is gonna support 20-series - might take a while, to say the least.
Second, the benefits are entirely dependant on both Iray and DAZ (for my use), and I really don't game, so there is not point in having raytracing for such things. The prices are insane as well.
So, no, I'll wait until next gen, at least

Thanks for your input.
I've visited a few Tech forums and many are saying they won't be buying an RTX card. Price tag and Raytracing are just two issues. Many are still waiting for AMD to do magic but of course DS needs an Nvidia card.
Would be nice to see that guy on the DAZ forums create that plugin for DS so folks can use AMD cards. I'd jump ship at the drop of a hat even though I only use DS a little.
September 15, 2018 at 3:28 AM #761283No.
I have 2 1080ti for rendering and a 1080 for some casual gaming. I see no point to upgrade at this point unless Iray performance is close to 2X the 1080ti, and IMHO that will not be the case and even then, considering the price tag, not that interesting.
So no. Green team is just out for a quick buck to finance the next iteration.

I find my old top of the range GTX690 quite adequate for my needs.
🙂
September 15, 2018 at 12:46 PM #762077The RTX card is on the list but probably not this year. Want to see if it has any major problems, so much is packed into it.

Thanks guys.
These are the same thoughts going around the Tech forums.
Also talk of benchmarks being bias is another thing to look out for as they don't give results for real world usage.
You can fool some of the people some of the time........September 15, 2018 at 10:07 PM #762708I would wait it took them a while to update daz when the last hardware change happen.
September 15, 2018 at 10:38 PM #762738With absolutely no benchmarks or comparisons done by anyone I'd trust there is absolutely nothing to mark the 20 series cards as being an upgrade on the 10 series at the moment. And raytracing is a technology that needs to mature, no games will support it for at least the next few years (or at least very few) and by then newer hardware will be due so this card is for early adopters or those with cash to burn.
Unless of course the benchmarks show this blowing the 10 series out of the water then I don't see this as being a viable option for the average consumer.

This is one of the big problems that has even the most hardened long term enthusiast saying many benchmarks are bias, therefore a pile of s**t and don't reflect real world usage.
Of course this attitude can change when thrown a few $'s by the manufacturer 🙂
It's not just the GPU's that will cost a lot. If you ran two cards in one rig the heat is tremendous and slows everything down (Been there)
So you'd more than likely have to liquid cool the cards which can come at another sky high cost.As I've said before, It's all good if it makes you some income so it pays for the hardware. Led lights and quad Titans for a game seem way over the top.
September 16, 2018 at 7:32 PM #764187Currently sitting on the 1080ti and I would have bought the 2080ti if it had at least 16GB of VRAM. But with only the same as the 1080ti I don't really care if it is 20-50% faster, it will still be a drag to render complex scenes that requiriere more than 11GB. So I'm waiting for the next generation.
September 16, 2018 at 7:58 PM #764218I think economics wise it pays to look for deals on superceded cards.
Much better VFM 😉

Yeah that VRAM issue is a bore. Why not give it 12GB + and be done with it.
It'll be the same old rehash, Titan will get the top end VRAM no doubt.
Look forward to seeing the price of the Titan cards LOL.Wise words as usual eelgoo 🙂
September 16, 2018 at 10:07 PM #764333The VRAM is based on the fact that this is a card made for gamers, and for gamers, 11 GB is more than enough, even for 4k output. There are several cards spotting more VRAM, but they're enterprise cards meant for rendering and CAD-work, and priced substantially higher. This isn't gonna change soon, I bet - maybe we'll see 16GB gaming cards in a generation or two, depending on what is done by the game-makers, but I wouldn't bet on it. DDR5/6 RAM is still horribly expensive, and it doesn't really make sense for Nvidia to push cards with "too much" (for the target market) VRAM, since then the cards will be too expensive.

Yep I know they are for gamers. Iray need Vram or it'll switch to CPU rendering, and that's crap for those with older cards and quad core CPU's.
Your talking about Quadro cards which can be seriously expensive and way out of reach for many hobbyists. You'll find Architectural offices using GTX cards instead of Quadro to save a few bucks. Iray seems geared more towards high end industries to show off their rendered wares to customers. How it ended up in DS is anyone's guess.
