Now there's a twist.. They don't kill us, they imprison us. Each in our own tiny habitable zone. They could control the population growth by doing that as well.
Anything that considers itself better may rebel. Do we care about stepping on ants?
Anything that has a free will will not want to be a slave. Look at history.
A small flaw in a program could set off an event. A computer could figure that humanity is not capable of protecting itself therefore it needs to be governed properly.
If you were a machine that could compute 1000 times faster than a lazy meatbag that required food and can not update its hardware to run more efficiently, would you want to be its servant?
Bladerunner (original, not the new piece of garbage hollywood put out) is an amazing movie that touches on genetically engineered clones as laborers, soldiers and sex slaves.
Today humans consider themselves better than other humans because of race, abilities or social status. Why would something superior to humans think differently?
Thats why I asked if emotions were a given with self awareness. Feeling oneself is superior to another is an emotion, whether its based on fact or not.
Not ALL humans think or feel they are superior.
Robots may understand they they were designed to help humans, but whos to say what they may think or feel, if they can feel at all. Its an interesting concept.
Also, what would define superiority? Their brain, strength, longevity?
Each human has their strengths and weaknesses. They may be superior to another in one way, while another is superior to them in another. Couldnt this also be true for robots.
If man can create sentient robots, can robots also create sentient man? If not, then who is superior?
Interesting concepts to mull over. 🙂
With that answer I could then say, it would be impossible for a robot of any amount of intelligence to be able to do harm.
However, I will redirect back to Adam and point out, I forgot about the military factor. The military WILL use robots as weapons. This brings another factor into play. Robot VS Robot VS Man VS Man.
All these kinds of discussions tend to go the same way.
First, there is no indication that a machine could ever become self-aware. While Sci-Fi shows like that concept, it may truly be impossible.
Second. there is no indication that a machine could have emotions. Emotions are bio-chemical responses that send instructions to our brain before the logical thinking part is even aware there is an issue... A machine could never have true emotions. (and some biologists think we evolved more complex emotions solely to procreate)Now having said all that, Those two things could be simulated to an extent right now. Self-awareness is actually a hard concept to pin down. Are ants self aware? They are aware they are alive to know they do not want to die, But nothing indicates that they are truly aware of what they are.... Gorilla's are self-aware. c.f. Jane Goodall. We do not consider them to be truly self-aware because they do no have a time awareness like humans.
So, for a robot to be self aware, it needs to know it exists, simple. It needs a time awareness (Which means they can plan for the future and evaluate the past) Simple.
That is about it for the definition of self-awareness.
Emotions can be simulated already as well, and responses could be pre-programmed.
Think about your typical day, Not a whole lot you do is truly original.
For a typical person, they follow a pre-set routine. If they feel hungry they eat. If they are thirsty they drink. When they see a person they say hi, when a person says hi first they respond. the ensuing conversation is relatively predictable based on the relationship.
But the problem is that a machine could never "feel". So a machine could not feel oppressed, and a machine could not feel guilty.... They can be simulated but that is different then the real thing...Sorry if I put people to sleep. This is one of the discussions I love.
