Call me a strange one, if it satisfies your terminology, but why in the name of wisdom, do folks keep purchasing ready made characters, when you could build them from scratch. It doesn't make sense to me other than folks are too lazy to make the effort. Some of the girls I''ve created could blow the competition away. I don't intend to put them up for sale, but try making your own babes! It's more satisfying when you make the babe of your dreams. Trust me!

@plebby that would be really nice.. but do you have a tut or tips on how to get started.. it would be nice to have a nudge in the right direction.. πŸ™‚

@gladson1976 It's kinda super easy if you just use morphs like Genesis Female Body Morphs and Head morphs, and GHD and the others also. Just shape each body part to how you like and face. Or you could use FaceGen to generate faces (either randomly or custom, or scan images of actual faces) and then it exports skin maps as well.

So that would get you body and face you like, plus skins. Just create extras like eyes from other products like Natural Eyes, etc..

@gts6 That I am familiar with.. morphs and facegen.. when he said "when you could build them from scratch" and "I don’t intend to put them up for sale".. I was thinking more like a totally new character from scratch.. πŸ™‚
    maybe I understood wrong..

Even though I've created my own custom characters with morphs, Facegen, merchant resources, etc., I've never actually sculpted a human character from scratch - I'm still teaching myself how to sculpt props, so sculpting a humanoid figure from scratch is far beyond my level of knowledge right now.
Also, I'm a compulsive collector; if I love a vendor's products, then I tend to collect them all, even if I never use any of them regularly. πŸ™‚

@gladson1976 I guess you mean sculpting vs using morphs? If you are not interested in selling these and if the end result is the same, what's the difference? You are still creating "art" because you are tweaking it and whittling away with each manipulation until you get it just right.

Yes.. I do mean sculpting.. and the tools of the trade..
.. and of course it doesn't make any difference whether I sculpt or morph as its going to be for my personal use.. but then its a nice skill I'd like to learn πŸ™‚

Just to follow up on this, would like to show something I just started working on a little while ago, this is gymnast Olivia Dunne that I created using just some of the tools I mentioned.

I still have to fix the bridge of the nose a bit and add some pores detail on the face, and still need to shape the entire neck/body/limbs. Otherwise the head and skin is complete. I try to make the skin realistic as possible, and this is just a rough draft not even fully rendered with lighting (just to give an idea what is possible with just the basic tools, no zbrush required.)

you can compare with the REAL olivia below:

@plebby - I have zero interest in creating a character from scratch. To me, that would be really boring and tedious. It's similar to why I haven't mowed a lawn in 30 years - I hire someone to do it - but I love sitting outside in the morning and listening to the birds. I have a finite amount of time and prefer to do things I like.

It doesn’t make sense to you why people buy assets maybe because you have not considered that not everyone uses Daz in the same way you do. It took me about an hour to create the pic below, including render time. From there I created Notebooks, affirmation journals, and t-shirts. After she was done, I created 6 other characters. All told, I spent a couple evenings after work and had a bunch of stuff I really liked and have sold (a few).

I guess for me it's the destination and not the journey.

    @lapucelle ...
yep, that's the point. creating characters from scratch is a very tedious and time consuming job which needs a lot of skill. i myself enjoy the process, but to pretend it's an easy job and everyone who won't/can't do it is just lazy, is quite nonsense. these sort of bragging don't give me the impression of competence and if i look at the points history of @plebby i know why he don't purchase ready made characters, well because he gets them from here ... 😄

I have at most 20 characters in my library. There I craft everything with. Sometimes when I need a special character like Wednesday. and When I'm done with her, I just delete her from my library. I really don't need hundreds of characters. The characters I use are different ethnic groups. with Different skin types, And that is enough for my needs. What I always do, Morpf a little bit until I have a good result.

In my library I have a lot of envoirment, shaders, clothes, Hair, tools, light and props. and Poses?... use only the basic poses. Mostly I make my own poses. Is of course a lot of work, but over time you learn.
And not to forget, the Emotions. I do Not have many, but some good ones. Finally I don't need much. It's fun to bend a face sometimes or play around with shaders. It's all about what you want. I just use a simple setup.

She is coming along very nicely.

Possibly the angle of the base of her nose needs a tweak, but it may be the angle of the render or reference photo.

What base did you start with?

I would lke to see her when you are done.

@eelgoo Thanks! Yes I fixed the nose a bit, looks much better now. When you say "what base did I start with" i'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean which image(s) did I use for reference? I did use many, to see different angles. Plus she is still somewhat young so there are still physical changes taking place so some pictures look different than others. Even the body changes a lot, sometimes much more on the slim/slender side, sometimes more athletic.

Oh, yes it is 8.1 (with lots of modifications to the surfaces settings).

Hardest part for me to grasp was to get more realistic skins that do not look like plastic on a fake doll. It took a lot of testing before I came up with ways that look right. I think the human eye detects skin imperfections so often its normal to us, and when we see something in DAZ without imperfections, it looks "fake" to us. So it took lots of merging of maps and normals, etc.

Here's a closeup of skin as its coming along. Probably need to open this image in its own tab to see it bigger close up, the imperfections.
