So importing OBJ files gives me a blank texture. Ive tried a few ways to rename and save the file but no go. Is there any way to link the MTL with the OBJ without having to load every single texture separately?
June 5, 2018 at 4:33 AM #629700MTL is a plain-text file, open it and ensure that the paths to the image files are correct. You may have to either move the image maps, or amend the definitions in the MTL file. Either way, assuming you are opening the OBJ in a proper, competent app, they should appear no problem.
June 5, 2018 at 4:36 AM #629706Thanks Ill give it a try. Im just pulling them into Daz.
June 7, 2018 at 6:37 AM #632122I might be mistaken here, but OBJ-files in DAZ have no "extra content" attributed to them (you will need to load them separately). If you want to keep rigging and textures, I think you will need something like FBX, or similar? Granted, definitely no expert on this, just what I seem to have picked up last couple months...
June 7, 2018 at 4:42 PM #632679some work some dont. To much effort to scroll through as many as i have. Thanks for the feedback anyway.
June 10, 2018 at 4:49 AM #635621@errilhl: I've not messed too much with exporting .OBJ from DAZ, except to export default-tex avatars for use in Marvelous Designer. Most of teh textured .OBJs I have are from 3rd-party sites... some work, others don't, out of the box. I frequently have to ether move the materials to where they're expected to be, or sometimes edit the MTL.
June 10, 2018 at 5:15 AM #635639I think perhaps it has to do with how the .obj-files are created, because the .obj-files themselves are "plain" - if textures are included, I think they need to be linked somehow, or at least placed in a folder where they're easily reachable.
Depending on what exactly you're loading, though, putting materials / shaders on .obj-files are fairly easy. If it's a character model, as long as it's using any of the DAZ base models, you can assign any skin and such you want (just pick one from a different model) - if it's an object, like a statue, or whatever, just put on an Iray shader (or multiple, depending on the surfaces registered).
If you want to make it easier, just make the obj-files into a DAZ-asset (DIM), and put textures and obj-files in folders and have the manifest created. That way, it will know where the mats are, at least.

That's exactly what the MTL does, it defines the materials and the realtive paths to their textures. Open one up in notepad to see how it works, it's fairly simple.
June 10, 2018 at 11:34 AM #635912Several textures pointed to non existent folders and i did not wish to create them. I also did not wish to type out custom locations. Deleting the location and keeping it in the same folder worked once I think. Maybe ill try again if I can come across an easy way to convert them but trying to load 10- 30 textures + various maps per model isnt something im willing to do.
June 11, 2018 at 4:23 AM #636789Work is work, 6 of one, half-dozen of another. At least now you know how to fix things.
