@Hereclese
I'm going to have to disagree with you about "True Noir Style..."
For one, True Noir is a film direction style. His example was a still image in portrait, not landscape, so that's already not quite true... and also he used a single artist's single image to establish rules for an entire genre. It seems to me that most people's perception of what noir is fits a very narrow cliche.
Noir as an film style is nothing more that non-standard camera angle and heavy emphasis on shadow-play.
Noir as a storytelling style is merely characterized by cynicism, fatalism, and moral ambiguity.
Even adhering to both forms at once leaves room for versatility.
Hell, Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho is a horror masterpiece, but it conforms to every definition of film noir.March 19, 2018 at 2:10 AM #537716@bobdawg As coolcat stated in a post above, I didnt see anything special in the post that wouldnt be listed in the first chapter of an art school book. Every photography book I own states the rule if thirds and several state rules of leading lines. Id be more impressed seeing a personal render and how it follows the rules than artwork from master painters long dead.
March 19, 2018 at 3:42 AM #537787@drgnmztr - The issue wasn't that he was giving ideas on art theory, many of us do that; and it wasn't that he was 'wrong' about what he was presenting. The issue was the _way_ he was presenting it, he insisted there is only one way to do art and said people who didn't agree with him were stupid (I think 'idiots' is the word he used).
As @jbuckland1984 mentions a couple of posts above, he was describing one period of art history, albeit a very influential one. HE was presenting this as 'the facts of art' and that anything using these methods (they're not even art techniques!) would be good art.
He was unwilling to back down even the slightest from this stance that his way was THE way to create art. Never mind that art involves creativity not just the following of some mathematical guidelines established centuries ago by some dirty old men who liked painting fat ladies and flagellation scenes 😉
tl;dr - dude was a dick, kept fighting till the end. When people entered his contest he didn't even bother applying those principles to a commentary on the submissions.
March 19, 2018 at 4:02 AM #537801@Adam i agree. i get your point.composition is mostly, for any artist, common knowledge. i wanted to see him put his money where his mouth is.
March 19, 2018 at 4:08 AM #537811@bobdawg totally agree. I dont think its a great loss but, it did start a great contest. Im cosidering bumping some points into a contest I want to see but, to much going on ATM.
March 19, 2018 at 4:14 AM #537818@Adam we is all very busy. 4 contests this month. oop, gotta go my latest test render is done. 🙂
March 19, 2018 at 4:19 AM #537823The contest was great, @robf4g210 handled it very well. Even with himself being extremely busy at the time. If you take away all the @jason content, it was like any other contest, with a spin on voting. It might just be easier to ignore and forget everything he said. Also, be warned, if anyone starts a thread like that again, they had better be prepared to follow up and participate or be flayed alive. Pretty ruthless crowd here. Just sayin.
March 19, 2018 at 5:35 AM #537867The internet has open the door to millions of people.
All with established opinions. If you cant handle
dealing with people that dont agree with you then
it may be time to get a dog.March 19, 2018 at 3:37 PM #538349Hi and congrats to all the contestants winners and all
(sorry I had a terrible flu) now i can say that some people here want to develop their work and others just want to send insulting messages because they can't handle new stuff....Anyway CONGRATULATIONS to THOSE WHO WON and ALSO TO ALL PARTICIPANTS... I never said I have time to go on critiques here I ONLY POSTED GUIDELINES for those who wanted them and sorry @aftyr byrn I didn't reply to your PM because i was very sick then...
I don't think it is wise to go on critiques here there should be a forum thread for that and then we should be ready to accept the critiques without hiding behind second and 3rd usernames and so on...
As I said before this is a contest that needs time to fully fledge with or without when some minds...I have seen great work done. I am only interested in the INTERACTION among artists during the pre-contest to SHARE their IDEAS and discuss instead of getting worried about the results...I myself started an acrylic rendering of a scene called the chase ((https://s19.postimg.cc/bsrxcm3oz/The_Chase.jpg))but the flu kind of delayed my work... Now I am ready to go on and as I said we are here to learn FROM EACH OTHER INSTEAD OF USELESSLY BREAKING DISHES ACROSS THE FLOOR...I don't care if some people don't like me but i do care If they can show me things....I don't know but as the British writer V. Woolf said
In her essay “Professions for Women,” “It is far harder to kill a phantom than a reality” (1988)March 19, 2018 at 3:50 PM #538360@jason glad to hear you are over the flu, it can be pretty nasty. Unfortunately this place does have a few that tend to dribble on without saying any constructive, same as rl. I didnt particapate, but atm unable to in anything. I thought the idea was a bit heavy on, possibly my pain medications influencing that a bit but I did find some of the info you ahared informative

Words are just words. D0GG0D.
March 19, 2018 at 4:22 PM #538389Once again, I'd like to congratulate the winners in this contest.
Let's take a moment to reflect on the success of the competition. I really believe, whether guidelines were followed or not, that we saw some of the best art Zone has ever had with the "Film Noir" contest.
Maybe some of your expectations were fulfilled, and maybe some of you anticipated different participation from other individuals. Since we are only an online community, and most of us don't know each other in real life, we can't possibly know what each and every one of us is going through in our private lives. Probably best to just shrug our shoulders and move on to the next competition.
One thing is certain, we all took something away from this competition, whether it was the mechanics of art, understanding of the "film noir" genre, or just the satisfaction of seeing some great renders.
I appreciate all who entered, donated points, judged, or just followed the competition and cheered on your favorites.
