As others have noted (and as they say) "Beauty sells", just as much as sex does. When most of the consumer base are after the Barbie and Laura Croftian aesthetic, that's who they'll more than likely cater to. However, there are great morphs out there that allow you to make imperfect changes (thank goodness) like body diversity packs, adding cellulite, folds, or using Skin Builder to add wrinkles, age spots, freckles, moles, stretch marks and so on.

My issue is with the "washboard stomach" look of nearly all models and that slim torso. When you do add weight, it usually looks off. Skin lacks a substance or "sponginess" of body fat, so even when you add clothes to a more "heavier than usual" model, it doesn't compress the skin (like tight pants over a thick pair of hips) unless you add a morph from a vendor or do it yourself with a deformer (I'm still not at all great at that myself).

Also, I think it's just easier for artists to go after the uncanny perfection, than the imperfection that pushes the software to its limits.

(and by the way, I love Barbie bodies and Laura Croft exaggeration, so I'm just as guilty as anyone)

Honestly if you are using bought morphs from DAZ or Rendo you'll be stuck with supermodel characters. Then again, why do you use them in the first place? It is dead easy and not exactly time consuming to create any kind of character just by dial spinning. The necessary tools are all available on ZoneGfx.
I absolutely never use any character from the stores without changing them to some amount and therefore have characters at available for virtually any requirement.

She's 19 and older looking than some renders I've seen floating around.

Normal isn't the new normal. DJ isn't Black Adam because he looks like the flute player in your high-school band.

SJ wasn't cast as Black Widow because she was 80 pounds overweight.

Occasionally people get picked because of skill and they blend in but that rarely what sells tickets. If you want normal then render a fat guy sitting at home watching football while his wife makes the kids a snack. Focus on their daily lives. Or you could render a Dragon and a wizard having a battle on a sheer cliff.
Just me but I get enough normal in my life every day so I don't need another dose of it.
