I haven't had any issues with my 13700K so far but there's been so much talk about instability, crashing and/or damage it's makes me worry. I don't game for hours on end and I guess DS is mostly GPU reliant but I do quite a bit of video encoding.
I see that Intel has now extended 13th & 14th gen retail CPU warranties by 2 years. Mine is a prebuilt PC so I don't think that includes me 🙁 .August 5, 2024 at 7:42 AM #2085663I switched to AMD, has more core / threads low power usage, and never had any problems with it in 4 years.
August 5, 2024 at 8:17 AM #2085665I have been running AMD since the early noughties.
I would never use anything else TBH.
🙂
August 5, 2024 at 10:41 AM #2085673Another AMD fan here. I always buy one generation old (usually after it's been out at least a year). This is mostly a cost saving feature but it also allows bugs to show up and be worked out. With motherboards it means I don't pay for knew features only to find that I need some expensive upgrade to enable it, or that it's hobbled in some way.
August 5, 2024 at 10:48 AM #2085674I'm using a ninth generation PC. Yet to decide when I'll upgrade. Works fine at the moment, as it custom built. Sticking with intel at the moment. Waiting to see what the 15gen will be like sometime next year.
August 5, 2024 at 12:12 PM #2085683Im using the 14700k and no issue so far. It shouldnt be affected by the oxidation problem tho.
It was the best budget friendly option for workstation application (like blender) when I've built the PC. To get something better I should have picked an i9 or the 7950X on AMD. Both would had represented a 40ish ? increase in price to get a 10ish % in in performance so I went for the 14700k.
August 5, 2024 at 12:25 PM #2085685I thought the more recent videos from the trusted youtubers like GN state all from 13700/14700 and upwards are going to be effected, with degradation worse with some more so than others going by batch numbers.
August 5, 2024 at 12:40 PM #2085686I may have missed a video or two in that saga but intel currently have two problem:
- a code problem that affect 13th and 14th gen that will be fixed in the next bios update
- an oxidation problem that causes 13th chips to degrade faster that cannot be fixed with an update
August 5, 2024 at 7:52 PM #2085712Unfortunately my PC was built in September 2023 so right in the period affected and before Intel has addressed the problem, even if they have now started to produce non-defective 13/14 gens.
@heetee - on top of those technical problems Intel also have perhaps bigger ones with profitability and consumer confidence. Most tech youtubers are no longer recommending Intel CPUs beyond 12 gen which shows how bad things have become. Intel is in such a bad financial situation I don't expect a general recall will happen. I'll just keep my fingers crossed.August 5, 2024 at 9:52 PM #2085713I hope AMD doesn't get cocky and do something stupid.
August 5, 2024 at 10:43 PM #2085720By and large they seem pretty well grounded.
Everyone drops the ball occasionally, but AMD seem to recover the fumble pretty quick.
🙂
August 6, 2024 at 12:48 AM #2085729They're not above some very dodgy claims.
August 6, 2024 at 7:10 AM #2085757I think that is pretty endemic in the industry.
August 6, 2024 at 11:17 AM #2085764Yeh they all do it, but that's no excuse.
August 6, 2024 at 12:31 PM #2085773I'm not condoning it, but there is always the temptation to rise to your competitor's hyperbole. :0/
