    The only runtimes I need to ever backup are stuff that I personally edit, like if I skin doctor some skins or add tattoos and bake them in. I save all those to alterations to the same location within my runtime folder, then just back up that location every month or so (depending on how often I make changes).
    As for all the other runtines, that doesn't really matter to me as I have the zip / rar files themselves backed up. That way if I lose my daz drive, I can just grab it from the backups and copy it over to the new location. Since I manually alter every download, such as creating new directories within them so that dforce hairs will go to a dforce hair folder within the hair folders, or having clothing go into specific folders based on the style of clothing, I don't have to worry about reorganizing then should the daz drive fail. I just need to unzip it to the new location and it will be automatically sorted the way I like. It's the reason I manually install everything.

    Had the almost the same happen when i was visiting my brother-from-another-mother in feb. only lost some anime backups and the back up to my mega account and maybe some MMD stuff but i'm still trying to see what i can recover off a PortHDD that i accidentally erased with an etcher program before working some old A3/V3 stuff into the organized(ish) main collection.

    I use telegram as a free backup medium. I now have 15000+ DAZ assets stored there.

    @ethiopia
    Directory Opus is the best, I ditched XYplorer for it.
    Also, after discount and internet coupons, it was dirt cheap. It's one of those core essentials that's worth getting a legit license for.

    @yanoma

    I guess you never broke your runtime by adding one or more bad assets manually. Once you figure out something is wrong, it can be crazy hard to pinpoint it, or to remove the offending asset. That's where a differential backup is priceless, just roll back to when it worked, and don't worry about possibly breaking things worse by an attempted uninstall.
    That's why I like Git for complex collections, let Git worry about what things looked like at [time X]. All I worry about is when it last worked right. 🙂

    Actually a git like library handling system for poser and/or daz studio would be amazing especially for creators that work on multiple projects at once.

    Thanks guys/gals for the Directory Opus recommendation... I am trying it out now.

    I gave Total Commander a shot... but it would get wonky at times, so I've gone back to WExplorer (Win11), and really wanted to try something else.

    Opus is plain wonderful. I have been using it since it came out. It's funny how the core idea is clearly based off the old Magellan used on Amiga's. As Chucky the psycho doll would say, a classic never goes out of style. You can of course customize it to add functions but you can also deactivate quite a few things you don't need. It allows for the use of colored labels, it has a mass renamer, and viewers for all sorts of media file types. It's definitely what Windows should have integrated way, way back.
    It's one program I am glad I bought full legit. I have it on three rigs and I simply couldn't do without.

    Ahem, Git =/= Github.

    Should I facepalm now, or wait till later? 🙂

    @Amberkat I read most of your posts as if you are already facepalming.

    You got me... All I saw was "Microsoft" and something deep in my soul snapped. 🙂

    lol no I get the "cherry-pick" reference, it just didn't flip the right switch on my funny panel.
    Maybe we should git reset --hard **/this/topic 🙂

    This is what I do. I have my library on an internal 8TB NAS drive and I picked up 2 Seagate Game Drive Hub for Xbox (also works on PC) and did a full backup to each one. One I keep in a safe deposit box at the bank with my important papers, the other in the box in my closet. Once a month if I add anything to my library (pretty much every month) I pop to the bank and grab that one, then do a synch of both and 1 goes back to the bank, the other back in the closet.

    I have decades of stuff myself that I can't lose, especially some things from sites that no longer exist.

    @Ethiopia DOpus? You're showing your Amiga side. 😉 I love Directory Opus. Wife hates it, though. It's not "windows explorer" even though it's almost identical in function.

    @Emilien Are you in the States? I can mail you another drive with a TB in assets, if it will help.

    Very sorry for your loss. Drives are delicate and fickle, when not SSD. I second the recommendation by @stachelzelle to try a docking station or external reader with separate controller. If you can get the thing to spin at all you might (might) be able to get some kind of access and data recovery. I've worked some miracles with such methods, and been completely disappointed upon others with same attempts, it all depends on the actual damage. Unfortunately a drop like that could honestly be the end. I hope not, but... "hope best, plan worst, something".

    Regarding backups, I thought one of the best (related) things I'd seen was @amberkat post about updating/backup here. And have been backing up similarly (manually) since.
    That was until today, where @amberkat schools with sage-factor-five advice once again.
    I have little knowledge/experience with Git, but would learn if it meant screened/functional backups as described.

    Thanks again @amberkat (and all others here with posting of other options) for this/these. This thread could save lives.
