I still have a bunch of things I bought from the Daz store not downloaded. I was simply wondering if there's any known issues with running DS while being online/connected to your account. Normally I'd block any software by my firewall since noone knows what kind of measures they have implemented for going through your drive. If they actually scan your files and submit data to their servers that'd be pretty bad for multiple reasons.
June 9, 2022 at 1:10 PM #1817693I never go online via DS.
June 9, 2022 at 1:28 PM #1817697I don't believe DAZ cares what you have on your drives, and I doubt they would have the resources to go skimming everyone's HDD and checking the results against your purchase history. In spite of that, Nah, I don't connect online from within DS. There are very few apps that I allow to go online in the first place.
June 9, 2022 at 3:49 PM #1817782if a program doesn't need internet to work properly it won't get any internet access. i never go online with DAZ and there is no reason either, you can download your stuff over their website and install it manually.
June 9, 2022 at 3:58 PM #1817786Neither Daz Studio nor DIM has the capability to "Phone Home". You are perfectly safe.
However, note that if you have Daz store products installed, and you log into your Daz account from within Studio, it may be prone to update metadata files or content for you! This may or may not be desirable, that's your call.
Logging in via DIM only allows you direct access to your Daz products held in your account and will not automatically update anything. You must initiate a download and/or install.
Daz Connect... I cannot vouch for anything. I tried it once and it was terrible. As I understand, it is entirely possible to wreck your runtime with it under certain conditions. I would not recommend it, the traditional tools and methods are perfectly fine. But no, they aren't going to find out that you have a street copy of any product or send Interpol to your door.
June 9, 2022 at 5:52 PM #1817847That's really good to know. How do you normally update DS itself then? Backup the old files and merge after it's done?
June 9, 2022 at 6:01 PM #1817851I update my studio with an other computer
June 9, 2022 at 8:48 PM #1817887I have been connecting with DAZ for years while running Studio or DIM. As Amber said, neither product has the ability to send DAZ information about what products you are using. That said, I only connect when updating things and there's no reason to stay connected once that's completed.
I'll connect with Studio itself every few months just to update the metadata since it's always a mess. When running DIM, if there has been a update for a product I acquired for testing purposes but I have since purchased it, then it automatically updates for me. No muss, no fuss. I don't see any reason to install anything manually from the DAZ store.

June 9, 2022 at 9:24 PM #1817897How do you normally update DS itself then?
DIM will always install to \Program Files\DAZ 3D\DAZStudio4 or \DAZStudio4 Public Build.
So, I make a copy of \DAZStudio4, then re-name the folder to add the version number (like DAZStudio4_4_16_0_3, I add a _B to denote this is a Public Build Beta). Then I can run DIM and let it install the updated Studio to the original default location. Now I have both versions in \Program Files\Daz 3D.

This not only makes it simple and organized, doing this allows you to keep plugins and UI layout the same without having to copy over specific folders or files.
Sometimes an update will bork your custom layout, but it's now a simple matter to use the import function to restore it with a click, assuming you made a backup. Always back up your layout!
June 11, 2022 at 5:01 PM #1818539Ohh, that's great!
I'll start doing that right away!
And thank you for the detailed explanation 😀June 14, 2022 at 6:01 AM #1819492Just to pitch in (I'm actually bored.. lol). If you manually add a directory to DS (right click DAZ Studio Formats > add Directory) DS shouldn't even contact it's own server.
Think of it this way: Why would DS need to contact Renderosity to confirm that you have purchased the DS product from them?
