After browsing around some freebie sites, I got to thinking about 3D models/characters that aren't part of the Daz line. And I wondered, "Why don't these characters ever really take off?"
Take for instance, Dawn. While the intent of Dawn (and by extension, Dusk and Luna) was to try and be a bridge figure for Poser and Daz users, it's clear content creators have no intention of supporting both programs (which I get why: it's a lot of work rigging shit for two completely different programs) and so you have 3/4ths of Dawn product being Poser-only, while 1/4th is for Daz. Even then, the amount of Dawn products have tapered off considerably on Rendo and HW3D compared to 2-3 years ago.
And then you have the Poser-only figures that have tried to challenge Genesis, but have fallen short: Sixus1's Scarlett (practically no one makes anything for her anymore), 3Dream's Raffael (a poor man's attempt at a Genesis 1-esque figure with a mouth that looks like a cat's butthole), and now Project Evolution... which only seems to be supported by two vendors on Rendo. Granted, PE is one man's passion project, but I don't think it'll take off at all in a year's time.
Hell, I think the only Poser-only character that had any long-term success was the original Star. Mainly because she filled the void left by Aiko 3 in terms of a legitimate anime figure. I imagine Sakura 8 pretty much torpedoed any chances for a Star 3.0 at this point, too. Even if Star is the Winx Club to Sakura 8's Sailor Moon.
And IIRC, someone asked Lady Littlefox if she was planning on doing an update of Cookie and Chip, and she allegedly said that toon characters don't sell very well for her, so she probably wasn't going to do it.
So, Zone, do you use any non-Genesis/Daz figures in your work (no, Generations 3-4 do not count) at all? Would you like to see more material for them show up on the Zone in the future?
