It was mentioned yesterday that someone should start a Star Wars thread for all the SW talk. So here it is. I finished the tonfa for my Sith-like character. I've added the final renders below along with a brief on how I managed it.
----So last week, my husband and I watched the Last Jedi and it as they always seems to do kicked off the creative bug in me. I'd recently found a laser tonfa that gave me some ideas but upon getting it inside of Daz I realized that it was pretty weak as far as appearance goes, so I put it by the wayside and randomly was working on revamping the maps in photoshop to make it look better and was getting some decent results. Then, I happened to pick up Substance Painter and in playing around with it, realized how awesome that piece of software was, and armed with my bit of photoshop knowledge, I was off and painting stuff with amazing results. So I imported the tonfa into it and immediately tossed out all the maps that came with it, baked the model and started painting and adding details. And wow, I was pretty impressed, so much that I ended up spending nearly 3 days working on the saber. So roughly 40 hours and 30+ various layer stacks, I present to you my final painter renders (yes, the blade remains untextured currently). After importing into Daz, the results are just as impressive although I need to sit down and fiddle with a few of the settings.

Good work.
I agree Substance Painter is a great app 🙂

Looks great!
So we’re not spamming you if we put our Star Wars artwork on this thread?
I’m envious that you have a spouse with similar interests! Don’t get me wrong... my wife is beautiful, intelligent and kind; she’s the love of my life and my best friend, but she could care less about my 3D!

Nahh, post away, art, stories, what have you. My husband loves Star Wars, and likes looking at my work and giving me great ideas of things to do but has no real interest in doing it himself. But we own a food truck and that pretty much occupies the majority of his time.
Now, I am struggling of getting some decent blade results, and it's coming along slowly. Trying to see what the best results I can pull out of the single tubes I am using before trying to figure out the best way to add additionals if need be.
April 6, 2018 at 5:24 PM #560061I think i finally got it looking good...

Got the atmospheric effect, go the glowing sabre, now i have to figure out the god rays and bring the contrast up in DAZ. No postwork at this time.
Few more tweeks.(Carried over from my other thread)

@aftyrbyrn - Looking good, you've got the atmospherics so the godrays should come rather easily with some well placed lighting.
Overall, I'm liking the intensity being shown a lot.

April 6, 2018 at 9:36 PM #560296Far from finished, but a decent start.
This is a render I started working on of Mara Jade:

I need to sharpen up the pose, work a little more on the lighting (more glow from that blade) and, of course, let the render finish.
Bloom wasn't working for me, but maybe I just don't understand it and need to read up on it. Just made a big sparkly purple mess.
April 7, 2018 at 1:27 AM #560581Bloom effects all lights. Or at least it did for me. It would require 2 renders im thinking . I still didnt get the results I wanted with about an hours worth of trying.
There has to be some magic setting in Daz. I know it isnt ILM but it has to be possible in this software.

yeah that's the biggest issue, but also a boon at times of the various optimizations and filters is that they effect everything. I'm still fiddling about trying to get some decent results in a scene with about twilight level of lighting, then I'll get her a proper outfit going.
April 7, 2018 at 4:13 AM #560739I messed with a bit more and posted it in the gallery.
I was considering doing a render on Mickey Mouse flushing the franchise down the toilet but, ill just try to get over it.

Thought that I had it more or less figured out. But then light the room and it all falls apart. Such frustration!
April 7, 2018 at 5:00 PM #561426I may or may not have a twi'lek obsession?
My go to is still Radiant's Lekku for v4, but I am enjoying the g2 twilek as well. The g3 twilek uploaded here is something I haven't toyed with much, as it's face texture comes with Oola's makeup and I STILL don't know how to create skin textures to match a character right. BUT ANYWAY.
1st successful (I think) twi'lek render I did.

I REALLY need to render more male twi'leks. *brow waggle.*
Something off about this one. Didn't like it.I have about 5 or 7 more twi'leks, but they're female and I don't wanna spam the thread with 29292929 images to load in a row xD
April 7, 2018 at 5:02 PM #561431Perhaps a mini contest for the best lightsaber settings.
