I hope it is worth it... Do we have any good benchmark scenes? Hoping it blows my 970 strx away...
March 7, 2018 at 1:06 AM #520961In theory it should be a significant improvement.
Make sure you are happy with it before you sell the old card on though.
🙂
March 7, 2018 at 5:03 AM #521139If you've got any scenes already with multiple characters/figures then try them out, the increased vram should ensure that it will chug through a scene with more detail, lighting, models and textures and less shuffling about. 3GB to 11GB is a significant increase, not forgetting the additional cuda cores and processing horse power. Congrats!
Unfortunately there is no real benchmarking you can do, other than render a scene you've previously rendered on your old card for comparison.
March 7, 2018 at 6:16 AM #521181Depends on the scene. I have a 980ti and going up to a 1080ti will only save me on average of 5 or 10 secs render time according to the daz forums own benchmarking test.
March 7, 2018 at 8:05 AM #521259yeah, going from GTX 970 to the 1080TI cut me from at 25/30 minutes full 100% convergence to 3 minutes... holy S. And DFORCE simulations, smoothing, increased display SUBD, all almost instant. This thing is SICK 🙂 and the few games i tried... wow. This card supports 8k rez... it's heaven. Rendering 1920x1080 scene from before (see Film Noir) took 30 minutes easy... choking on memory, this take about 5.
March 9, 2018 at 1:35 AM #523975I saw an EVGA 1080Ti on the shelf at Best Buy for MSRP 2 days ago and almost grabbed it, but I had two open box Sonos speakers in my cart already.
March 9, 2018 at 7:07 AM #524251I haven't seen a TI at our best buys forever, i happened to go in to micro center angry, wanting something to make happy. I saw they had a 1080TI, and a nice one at that, and well yay. @eelgoo, i'm definitely happy. I'm going to gift the 970 and an 850W PS and a not so great PNY SSD, to my daughter, who wants a gaming machine at her house.
March 9, 2018 at 7:25 AM #524264Well, I am very pleased for you.
That is a double win as your daughter gets something out of it too.
Whenever my kids computer needs an upgrade, I give them whatever I am using & buy a new improved version for myself.
That way you are getting two upgrades for the price of one.
🙂
March 12, 2018 at 2:04 AM #528094yup yup. Her eyes were popping out of her head when she was able to crank all the settings up. And sticking their page file on the SSD, all around win for her.
March 17, 2018 at 9:47 AM #535313If anyone cares... watch this video of my render, it's pretty quick. took over a 1/2 hour on my 970. 1.5 minutes on my 1080ti

I also went from a 970 to a 1080ti it's a huge improvement. One of my renders took me overnight once on the old card, the 1080ti did it in about 25 minutes.
