I've been noticing a number of characters that have no textures included. The text mentions that the promos are made using this or that character. A quickee search reveals that 'this or that' character is another 20 bucks, making the total for the original character that you wanted, 30 bucks. I see lots of characters with textures included for half that...or less.
What gives? Are they just lazy and/or talentless and hoping to scam a few bucks off of unsuspecting newbie customers? Or is there something more nefarious here? I'm wondering if this isn't a response to the recent hysterical screaming by a few self-righteous religious nutcases on RenderHub who got on a soap box about how anyone who wanted textures and realistic parts on younger characters must be achild molester.
In any case, it would be a positive service to the pirate community if people posting these would also post the required character along with it....kind of a package deal.November 16, 2025 at 3:22 PM #2153204That's what I tried to do w/ the custom character sets. Since this is a site that def. goes 'Arrr!" a lot, you don't have the same constraints that you would in the stores. You make something cool, then include everything else that you used to build it.
It's not an easy task (and I guarantee you'll miss some items - ask me how I know), but it's 100% worth it in the end.
November 16, 2025 at 6:55 PM #2153223Some vendors are a lot better at texturing than others, and obviously just doing the morphs is going to be a lot quicker.
Where it goes a bit awry is when they try to charge a full character price for a couple of morphs only!

November 16, 2025 at 7:05 PM #2153224As I said on another thread, creating a full character looks a daunting task that demands a lot of skills, so I don't think there is any master plan here, just people who don't have that whole set of skills trying to make some money.
About realism on younger characters, Daz's modular approach, where you can mix and match all kinds of skins, shapes, geografts...etc makes very difficult to stop people from creating this kind of characters for nasty purposes; I don't think that splitting textures from characters would help preventing this, so I would discard that hypothesis.

November 16, 2025 at 7:41 PM #2153225@keab, That makes a lot of sense. There was a big stink about that at RH a while back and a few creators left and set up shop elsewhere. A couple left because RH didn't publicly flog the creators who made those characters. It got pretty ugly for a short while and from what I've read in their forums lately, at least one former creator is still trying to blacklist another creator in other venues. How immature and petty can they get?

The usual solution to that was to collaborate. One person would make the morph, and another would make the texture. Profits were then split 50-50, or whatever they negotiated. Sometimes A morph was made, but the vendor would reach out to lots of other vendors who were good with textures, and both would release their complimentary products at the same time for a discounted price on each.
No idea why people can't do similar today.
