Not looking for ads or affiliate links, but I am looking for a new VPN provider.
I use Proton which is pretty good, but in order to get the best use of it, IMO you have to spring for the Visionary subscription level, which costs around $350 USD/year. That's getting to be way too pricey, and it positively sucks at things like split-tunnels, choosing protocols, etc.
I'm trying Bitdefender VPN (~$70/yr USD should I decide to go for it year-to-year), but it lops off at least 20-25% of my speeds (Proton only took maybe 10% off the top). I will say though that this one has very competent split-tunneling abilities, and the double-hop 'poor-man's-TOR' feature is very nice when I want to really obfuscate things. I also like that I can pick specific VPN protocols.
I may decide to keep BitDefender, but before pushing the button, I wanted to know if there was anything else out there competitively priced and at the same time easy on resources. You don't have to tell me what you use, but I'd love to know what you'd recommend.
October 27, 2025 at 2:49 PM #2150591I use Nord because of it's stellar reputation for telling governments and content providers to fuck off. I'm not doing anything illegal (weird and maybe creepy at worst) but I want to keep my sicko porn tastes to myself.
October 27, 2025 at 2:56 PM #2150592Have you considered Mullvad? Not sure if it's the fastest but I have heard some good feedback for its safety features. When I was gaming, I had my own wireguard setup on a dedicated kimsufi, as most VPS solutions tend to throttle bandwidth. AFAIK most public VPN providers run atop some kind of virtualization with shared bandwidth, so ymmv if you are going that route.
You haven't mentioned about your speed/latency requirements, but if you just need consistent speed and latency, you should setup your own within a budget of 120-150 EUR/year.
October 27, 2025 at 3:18 PM #2150593Agree with Ethiopia with Nord as my main vpn [also have Proton, but lesser use].
Nord has some extras worth looking into as well.
It can be installed on up to 5 systems [I think - without double-checking].
If you have more than one system, with it installed, booted up you can do file transfers between them via internet. A little slow but can be handy.Sometimes able to find good promo deals for 2yrs, and at renewal - if not done automatically - they usually try to sweeten the renewal cost.
October 27, 2025 at 3:24 PM #2150596Also, if you can't afford a dedi server for wireguard and must use a VPS, I would very strongly recommend Gcore Labs. Their hardware specs seemed a bit dated when I was using their VPS, but their network and BGP routing is simply ENETERPRISE/GAMING grade.
I wouldn't recommend any of those marketing heavy VPN providers as their shared traffic is almost always flooded with Netflix and other streaming content.

October 28, 2025 at 10:06 AM #2150689VPN speed entirely depends on where you are and where you are trying to connect. My VPN price has gone up significantly this year and it will cost me $150/yr for a 2 year plan on my next renewal. Depending on where I am and the location of the site I am connecting to I have experienced speed between 4Mbs to 800Mbs. For Google stuff I can usually get 300Mbps+ no matter where I am.
Connectivity for me is the only factor and the two hardest tests are the Great Firewall of China and Netflix geo-blocking. I've never found a VPN that can work on both over long-term. A lot of VPN claim they can but most just break when either China or Netflix upgrade their systems, which is few times a year.
