Okay, so curiosity got the better of me and I d/loaded and tested the Alpha.
Pros: It's not bad. I totally dig the "universal' viewport option, and it loads and even renders new or pre-existing scenes in record time - they really unfucked the pooch when it came to file loading times, and I have to give them credit for that. Backward compatibility seems to be fine, though; for funsies I took a scene made in 2025 and opened it in 4.24, and that seemed to work and render just fine.
Cons: the render settings option selection is ass right now, so you can't use denoise filters or any useful bits like that (I use it real heavy in toon renders, which allows me to take normal skins and toonify them way easier.) I'm guessing they'll expose that part of the engine once it goes to pub release. Lots of other controls missing, but again, they may come along in due time. Also, if you have any headlight settings on a camera from a previous version's scene and then you open the scene in 2025, you can't really use the camera anymore w/o ditching the headlight settings, which kind of sucks.
Still playing with it a bit, so more updates as I find out more about it.
September 2, 2025 at 8:42 PM #2143734I only go to it for the much faster loading, but I still can't get it to render correctly.
I tried all the suggestions with the render settings, but I still get blurry renders and some times jagged edges.September 2, 2025 at 11:03 PM #2143744What puts me off most is the likelihood that most / all of your plug ins aren't going to work.
September 3, 2025 at 1:38 AM #2143760I made the mistake to download an early version of generation 4 and ended up with so many items that stopped functioning like certain types of images like that of Flipmode's HDRI maps, Genesis 3 textures that would crash Studio, settings for time or iterations that vanished from the menu, which forced me to go through all settings to readjust. So I'll wait this one out. I've got a computer that is powerful enough so I don't have any problems with the program loading slowly, and since I changed the motherboard from ROG to TUF, I haven't experienced much crash at all, so I'm not concerned with those advantages. I render raw, which means I don't use any denoiser or image alteration tools. But I do use a fair amount of plugins and I can't risk them not working.
September 3, 2025 at 5:24 AM #2143773Grouchy Old Fart, could you please post the updated portable version of alpha daz here?
September 3, 2025 at 8:31 AM #2143793I find that if you have a substantial amount of RAM available, loading G8F isn't that bad anyway, even with a lot of morph bloat.
September 3, 2025 at 9:53 AM #2143798Just read that all plugins that became premier exclusive will not be updated for the free version. So no more mesh grabber. That's a real blow to my process!
September 3, 2025 at 12:11 PM #2143811They really know how to p*** off their customers!
Stick to DS 4 then. :0/
September 3, 2025 at 12:25 PM #2143814That's the only choice @eelgoo . Unless they do something spectacular with the official 2025 release, there's not much incentive, unless you have a 50 series nvidia card that I can't afford anyway. So problem solved 🙂
September 3, 2025 at 12:41 PM #2143815I suppose looking at it from a different angle, they have actually made it easier, by effectively eliminating it as an option. 🙂
September 8, 2025 at 2:05 PM #2144410Apologies for being late to the thread, had a RL thing I had to go take care of. You're right that most of the plugins are DOA for now, which sucks, but I actually understand why if things under-the-hood are upgraded/updated.
I don't have a portable d/l, but I will try to get one the next time.
September 8, 2025 at 5:22 PM #2144434TBH, as it stands, I wouldn't bother.
