It varies wildly depending on what kind of item it is. Something that a figure can hold can be parented to say the hand and it will (mostly) stay there as the figure is moved. Hats aren't bad either. Stuff like clothes need to be fitted to each generation and that's an entirely different can of glowing, radioactive worms. Give it a go and see what happens.
There's a series of utilities that might help. Check daz for "Props and Poses Converter" and "Prop Minion"
