I downloaded Immortal Heroes Zisheng Hair, and its' installed size is over 11 gb. That's multiple times larger than any other hair content. I see that it has a lot of options, a lot of colors, and has a lot of supported character shapes. It's a cool, unique item, but how large is too large? At what point do you decide an item takes up too much space to have installed?
December 11, 2024 at 5:25 PM #2107582There is something very wrong....use caution opening file
December 11, 2024 at 5:54 PM #2107584If an individual item (not a bundle) is over 2GB installed, it goes on my slower library drive (an 8TB Sata SSD) over my main library drive (a 4TB m.2 SSD). Mostly that drive has billboards, HDRI packs, and a handful of really poorly optimized outfits.
This hairstyle would get a nope out of me unless I was doing a specialized project that it made sense for.
December 11, 2024 at 6:02 PM #2107585@Anna1945 No viruses were detected from scanning the rar and the zip. DIM says the ready to install size is only 1 gb, but after installing, it jumps up to 11gb. And 11 gigs are definitely being taken up from my HD since I uninstalled it and got it back.
December 11, 2024 at 6:08 PM #2107586I make a decision before installation.
If it is 500Meg or over I probably won't bother with downloading it.
If it is for G9 & G8 I might consider it, bearing in mind the fact I will only install the G8 content.Really though, there are hundreds of better optimised legacy hairstyles, which are fine, especially with an aftermarket shader.
I am getting a lot more picky with these new bloated hairstyles that seem to be prevalent.

December 11, 2024 at 6:13 PM #2107587I download enormous hdri files that don't come close to this
I hope you are correct, still say something sounds bad
Repeating you are saying 11gb.
Not a typo?
In the public area there are bunches of covnerted hairs that
don;t equal this
For that size, they should send the person to put it onDecember 11, 2024 at 6:18 PM #2107588If and when you install it, can you tell me its size in the Runtime?
Thank youDecember 11, 2024 at 6:38 PM #2107589@Anna1945 I don't know much about runtimes, so let me know if I screenshotted the correct folder (last image).

December 11, 2024 at 6:49 PM #2107590No image!
Assume windows
Assume Runtime.
Double click Runtime
Double click textures
Right click the folder that holds the hair
Look at propertiesor
open library in file folder
goto runtime>texture
this should stand out like a sore thumb right click look at propertiesIf you have a mac, unfortunately we are done
December 11, 2024 at 6:58 PM #2107591It looks like all the HMats are what's causing so much space to be taken. There are over 500 HMats that are 18mb each.
December 11, 2024 at 7:01 PM #2107592@Anna1945 I fixed the images. I was using imgur instead of postimg. Sorry.
December 11, 2024 at 7:26 PM #2107595I went ahead and bought the bundle on here to do some file analysis. It's possible it's using entirely too many/too large texture files, or the morphs aren't optimized.
Edit: Holy shit the materials are poorly optimized. Each "material" file (of which there are like 30+) is a 20MB file. I don't have the stuff in front of me to analyze everything that's being done in each of those files but there's absolutely no reason each one should be that big.
December 11, 2024 at 8:30 PM #2107603It depends, but lately I've gotten real stingy with disk space. For instance, the SPR clothing uses way too much disk space for what little it provides. Sure, it's high-quality mesh, but 100x the disk space versus a comparable item that's maybe 98% as good? No thanks.
Maybe it's nostalgia. Every Poser item I've ever collected, in all of my Runtimes, combined, from 1998 to present, uses 166 GB total.
By contrast, My DS content with roughly the same number of assets, from 2015 to present, across two directory sets (G9 vs. Everything Else), total 1.7 TB and counting.
Ugh.
Now disk space isn't as big of a deal, but remember that bigger items do take up more active RAM, and uses more CPU time to process in a working set and more GPU power to render.
Advice? Use your common sense. Compare the item to similar items on offer. You'll learn pretty quick what is bloated and what is useful.
December 11, 2024 at 8:35 PM #2107604Apologies, by my comments I am increasing your paranoia.
You have installed it....assume it works.
Down the road you can determine if it is worth the time
(and space, and rendering efforts)
I have seen converted hair bundles that did not have this size.
I personally would not have bought it or taken it if it was given to me.
Best of luck with it.
Don't let comments from strangers deter you.
Down the road feel free to tell me how wrong I was.
I welcome itDecember 12, 2024 at 12:44 AM #2107630 -
