Hi.
Recently, the "www" part of the DAZ 3D website URL is sometimes replaced with "delorean".
Does anyone know anything?
July 25, 2024 at 4:40 PM #2084334try loading the page at exactly 88 Mbps and see if it takes you back in time
July 25, 2024 at 10:43 PM #2084368Yeah, it looks like delorean is a subdomain of daz3d.com.
The http://www.daz3d.com url doesn't show a redirect to delorean, so delorean might be a test page they just haven't deleted yet.Why you got redirected will remain a mystery (maybe a Cloudflare thing...).

July 25, 2024 at 11:43 PM #2084373Daz's site has displayed infrequent goofy errors for years, and still has some ongoing problems that they apologize for but never fix (log-on_log-off thing, constant cookies script, can't post, and a few more oddball ones). I don't think they give a shit anymore.
@jorgen74, Thanks for that info. The 'Delorean' link seems to mirror the regular site perfectly. Can I assume that they test shit here first? Would it be worthwhile to visit this site from time to time to see if they're trying something new out?July 25, 2024 at 11:51 PM #2084374Their site mirrors their software 🙂 .
July 26, 2024 at 12:49 AM #2084376I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the 'delorean' sub-domain was specifically for pre-update backups; literally allowing them to instantly go "back in time" in the event that a pushed update to the store goes wrong or experiences an issue. It would be a little weird but not terribly surprising. The page load would simply temporarily re-direct to the specific 'delorean' sub-domain as the default until the desired update to the site is fixed, thus essentially allowing them to go back to the future.
July 26, 2024 at 1:18 AM #2084377That's interesting @livingpixesl. Is this normal operating procedure for sites?
July 26, 2024 at 1:40 AM #2084378@ethiopia I really have no idea! My knowledge of web design and maintenance is admittedly pretty sparse. I know that sub-domains are often used to present different versions of a site (ie mobile, or various languages) so I just tried to come up with a reasonable explanation as to why they would specifically use 'delorean' as a sub-domain.
July 26, 2024 at 1:51 AM #2084381@ethiopia @livingpixels .. this is pretty much standard operating procedure for websites (as far as i've seen).. but normally the backup domain would not be publicly available.. in case of the update going wrong a simple redirect to the backup domain would keep the site running till the issue is fixed..

Thanks to all for your interesting answers.
Based on your information, I am now wondering as a layperson whether the security of the subdomain site is the same as the official one.
What about, for example, private data from an account after logging into it?July 26, 2024 at 8:38 AM #2084411I'll bet this is one reason that sites get hacked. I've discovered that when a site updates, say yearly for a clothing site, the old stuff often remains. A while back I followed an image link to a popular clothing site and grabbed the picture. Clicking around I found that the older pictures (from years past) where still there, but the links weren't. Once I figured out the URL configuration for the images, I was able to manually type them in and grabbed dozens of large images from the older stuff. It was quite a haul. It looked like they had simply stuck new pictures in to the catalogue with new links but left the old pictures on the server, free for the taking once you knew the URL.
A knowledgeable friend with similar tastes, is able to browse servers freely with some special tool (and the ability to use it) and occasionally sends me links to images from sites, gathered in this way. It's some kinda 'back door' thing.July 26, 2024 at 8:52 AM #2084413This ongoing thread at Daz might offer some clues...
