Are there any differences between the two?
April 3, 2024 at 9:11 PM #2068332If I remember properly, the main differences are
1/ face rigging is slightly different (and better on G81). This makes G81 expressions not usable on G8. But there is a trick to use G8 expressions on G81.
2/ skin shader is different (and I think a couple of surfaces have been renamed). You cannot use G81 skin on G8, but the opposite is possible by selecting the appropriate UV in the surface tab.Besides that face/body morphs are 100% compatible, poses are identical and clothing/hair is compatible (though I had to change scene identification of the char a couple of times).
April 4, 2024 at 3:48 AM #2068402If a morph is saved while applied to 8.1, it won't be available to use on 8. That can be remedied, it's just an avoidable nuisance.
The surfaces haven't just been renamed. The mapping has been modified. The back of the head is its own surface, now (Head). It is not attached to the torso UVs, as with Gn8. Now it is scaled closer to the Face scaling.
Most things designed for Gn8 will work on 8.1.
Most things designed for 8.1 can work on 8 with varying degrees of effort.
April 4, 2024 at 11:22 AM #2068435how hard is it to use 8.1 skin on 8 ?
April 4, 2024 at 12:11 PM #2068446To be honest, I'd likely just use 8.1. 8.1 has all morphs available to use, better bends and better expressions. Textures can be converted down. I'd do that with Ultimate Unwrap 3D Pro. I think there's a way in DS for that, but I've never bothered with it.
April 4, 2024 at 2:57 PM #2068472Anyone willing to help a noob, or at least point him in the right directions with regards to the G8 expressions working on G8.1 ? I heard there are some files which need to be modified but I don't really know where to start as to not mess things up. Thanks in advance to anyone willing to lose their time to help!
April 4, 2024 at 4:27 PM #2068496I still use G8 as my main figure, and 8.1 has a very strange behaviour, guess if any of you has met that situation.... blink morphs creates a very distorted eyelids. Any idea what can it be?

There are some dummy files to remove. All is explained here https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/477386/how-to-get-genesis-8-expressions-working-on-genesis-8-1
I only use G81, which is far better than G8. If you want to use G8 chars, just load the base G81 and apply the same morphs as the G8 char. You can then either apply the same G8 skin or a G81 skin.
April 4, 2024 at 5:39 PM #2068527Thanks! And no, I do not wish to use them, I plan on converting a bunch to 8.1 using Jay's method which is quite simple. As far as said thread, I saw it already and some were saying that the OP's way was a bit flawed and didn't work all too well down the line so I was hoping for a more conclusive way that doesn't leave anything up to interpretation but I guess I'll just pick the thread apart again and write down the best way of doing it.
