    I was doing some research on the river styx and checking assets to see what I could come up with. I ran across info that I wasn't aware of. There is apparently 5 rivers in Hades. There's the styx, Acheron (river of pain), the Lethe (river of forgetfulness), the Phlegethon (river of fire) and the Cocytus (river of wailing).

    I got curious and went looking for artist's art based on these locations. All I could find where variations of the river styx. I thought this might be a good subject for an art contest. I would love to see what some of you guys would come up with. I'd love to see something with all 5 of the rivers represented in separate renders.

    River Styx & Mythology

    The River Styx is not the only river in Hades. The other major rivers include the Acheron (river of pain), the Lethe (river of forgetfulness), the Phlegethon (river of fire), and the Cocytus (river of wailing). Charon, the ferryman, ferries the souls of the dead across the river into the underworld, but he requires payment for his duties. He would locate his coin traditionally in the mouth of the dead. Without payment, the dead would not get into the underworld and would be left to drift on the shore for 100 years.

    The gods used the River Styx to swear oaths upon. Zeus swore an oath to Semele and, since he had to adhere to it, the unfortunate outcome was her death. Similarly, Helios was responsible for the death of his own son when he swore upon the river. If a god did not stick to his oath, he would be forced to drink from the foul river and thus loose his voice for nine years. The myth originated during the Titan war when the goddess Styx allied with Zeus. Once the war was over, Zeus declared that every oath sworn would be sworn to her.

    The River Styx was believed to have magical properties and could make a person invulnerable. Achilles was allegedly dipped into the river by his mother, making him invulnerable, but his ankle remained a weak point as he was suspended by it when dipped into the river. Achilles became a great warrior, but he eventually died when an arrow struck him in the ankle. The weak point became known as an Achilles heel.

    Ancient historians believed the death of Alexander the Great, the king of Macedonia, may have been the result of the poisoned water of the Styx. Modern scientific sources reveal the water may have contained a deadly bacterium.

    So years ago when I was a kid, I use to play this game "King's Quest 6". It had the river styx in it and Charon (The boatman); it was what I always thought of when ever it came up.

    Interesting or no?

    Dark, mythical, and legendary. Love the idea. Very ambitious but could see so many interpretations that could play out.

    I figure people could get really creative with this. There's so many shaders and assets that could be put to use here. Anything from cave river systems, glowing lights, colored flames. Would make for an interesting mix of lighting on subjects. Plenty of ghosts and skeletons, ultra violet light systems and shaders as well. I would really be interested in what subject matter people would use to convey the mood of those particular rivers.

    I'll try and work something up over the week here, maybe get peeps interested.

    EDIT:

    I just got to thinking, there's all these really interesting head pieces as well. There's allot that could be done with these subjects. I'm off to do some research lol.

    So there's 5 rivers in Hades? At least I now know what to expect 😨, better bring my asbestos undies.
    I reckon you should go with that idea as it's got lots of room for different interpretations. Rendering... well... I wouldn't know where to start, it would be quite challenging.
    Then again...........

    @frank22

    Yeah, this could be a bit difficult. Seems there would require some research into what each river is about. I would imagine there to be some really interesting interpretations on these things.

    Found a map but I'm not sure if that's just someone's interpretation. What ever, it's cool non the less. This site has some more detailed infos on the different rivers.

    I'm finding allot of mixed info on this subject. I read that the river styx is blue but then read somewhere else that it was made of blood. WTF... Maybe a mixture idk. What ever looks better I suppose lol.

    I'll see what I can come up with, hopefully I won't kill my little 1050Ti.

    I don’t think the colours or style really matters so much as those are all creative interpretations. What more important I think is how it conveys the theme of punishment, suffering and whatever lore is behind those places.

    @diviniren

    I think you're right. This will be a tough one. Going to take me some time but I think I have an idea on how to approach 2 of them. The other three are a bit difficult. Maybe working in the particular deity that's associated with that river.
