Hi , I'm thinking of getting an external ssd (my internal is 3/4 full)and moving MY DAZ 3D LIBRARY on to it and was wondering if I would need to move ALL of my Daz Studio to there or if it would still work properly with just the library moved and is there anything else I would have to do to get it to work properly. I should also say I mostly manually install my products just drag and drop them into there. Also what ssd would be best ? the faster I'm sure the better or ? it would have to be 3.0 usb and at least 2-4 TB

I always work from a remote My Library.

Just add a new directory from within DS.

From 'Content Library', right click Daz Studio Formats, 'Add A Base Directory' from the drop down.

Personally, I do things the other way around.

I have a small internal SSD just for the OS

Everything else is on internal & external HDs & backed up.
There was at one time an issue with SSDs that they didn't like too many overwrites, so I tend to use good quality conventional HDs for storage.

The speed of the drive won't make a huge amount of difference to Daz. I've never seen it saturate my HDDs let alone my SSD, and the price per TB is cheaper with mechancical drives than with SSDs.

Is there a reason you want or need an external drive? Unless you're using a laptop or have a small form-factor PC, fitting an internal drive is as easy as taking the case panel off, connecting two cables and putting a couple of screws in, and internal drives are generally cheaper than externals. I've had... mixed experiences with external drives back when they were a relatively new thing, and have avoided them ever since. They always seem to lose their connection half-way through a big data copy and I've had occasions where they've just lost files. Others swear by them though, so YMMV.

The other option you have is a NAS or Network Attached Storage; basically an external drive that connects to your PC via the network rather than USB. They're more expensive than USB externals but you can get them with multiple drive bays so you can add more storage later. Some of them also do clever stuff like disc mirroring or RAID arrays so you can have an entire disc fail and not lose any data. Off-the-shelf ones are pricey, but if you've got an old PC sitting around you can build your own. I'm actually planning on building my own as my storage needs have outgrown the available drive bays in my case and my wife has filled my current 'file server' with a couple of terabytes of cooking and baking shows. Using some spare PC parts and second-hand HDDs I estimate it's going to cost me ~£300 for 12-20tb of storage depending on drive sizes and how I set the arrays up. That should be plenty for my Daz collection and at least a few months of Great British Bake Off episodes....

I'm not sure why you'd go with external as it's likely going to cost more.

Anytime I need more space, I just buy another 4TB SSD. They're definitely more expensive than SSD's, but they've gotten to a point where they 'should' last longer than HDD's.

The thing that annoyed me when I used a mechanical drive is that it would go into sleep mode and needed to spin up again every time I changed something in a scene. Only took a few seconds but it was annoying. I suppose there might have been a way to stop the HD going to sleep but I don't know how to do it or if it was good for the HD.

I have two internals my c: drive has my op system and my daz studio library's on it (1TB ssd) and I also have my D: that is a 2TB HDD that has different Daz/poser and games ect it's where I keep the other stuff that's not directly installed in Daz , I was just thinking that I may be better off moving Daz to an external ssd so I don't fill my pc with a bunch of Daz stuff I have lots of space in my hdd but the ssd is 3/4 full

@frank22, it is very easy to turn off the sleep mode for HDD. Just Google it. Constant HDD starts and stops increase the chances of their failure.
