I thought it would last a little longer than this...I mean, it didn't even give me a warning! No errors, not a single problem...then BAM !!! I come home from work, not to a room full of smoke...but something much more sinister...a clicking sound coming from the heart of my machine...no, not a heartbeat - something much worse...anybody ever buy a zip drive? remember the "Click of Death"? But this wasn't that loud.
Maybe it's a fan?? Yeah, right...who ya tryin to kid here? You know better than that!!
Yeah, all right...it's a drive... What's that? Did I hear you ask which one? Do you really think you need to? One hint: it wasn't the boot drive!
Then again, I've been meaning to redo my runtime, but DAM...it took my entire library - runtime... scenes... RENDERS??? Holey Cheese and Rice!!! Now I gotta start all over...
Whooda thunk a drive {WHAT??} two months under NINE YEARS OLD[???] woulda crashed like that...
In my own defense, I didn't realize the drive was that old...I mean, I only put it in there...uummm...last year uummm computer...I'm getting too old to remember that far back...
At least all the downloads were backed up to a separate drive - that's less than two years old (I checked the date today).
So now I get to start all over. I may be a little scarce around here for a while, but my e-mail will always let me know when something happens with my name attached to it in some way...

Well, on the positive side, it gives you the 'opportunity' to start afresh with the Runtime.

You might consider this thread before you start out! 😉

    Good luck!

9 years? Seriously? Thats basically forever for me. 3-4 years is tops in my case. And 4 years is pushing it. Unless its an external that I only use occasionally to watch movies or add stuff too.

But I still feel the pain. When I installed my hybrid internal SSHD a few months ago, I was able to just copy everything from Daz Documents on the USB drive I'd been using as C for 2 years. Saved me from having to reinstall everything. So NOW, I'm using that method as a backup, and keeping all of my zip content on another USB drive. In a few months I'll get another 4TB USB drive to put my finished work on. I've lost everything from the past before which really sux.

    We need data crystals...

Dude that sucks. Been there. I lost my data at rest drive, where i store everything i DL. Since then, if you saw the other thread where i posted configs, i have two (2) 6 TB drives doing backups. One via windows builtin backup solution, on an external 6TB, and one for stuff i want to make sure to save as originals, other than that, i moved to 7 SSD drives in my system. Click of death, yeah, good luck on the SSD drives. AND DON'T USE REFS. Lost a whole drive because of REFS corruption, REsilient File System my ass.

Just do yourself a favor, start buying 1TB SSDs. I have like 3 1TB, a few 750 GB and a 500 GB and 240 GB. Get a $50 PCIE SATA card with 4 or 6 ports, and a good clean power supply, get a large UPS as well. Clean conditioned protected UPS power will also make your system and components last so much longer. I lost a TV, a monitor and drive in one week during bad electrical storms.

And if your still wondering, https://www.backblaze.com/blog/how-reliable-are-ssds/ a short (not really) read on why SSD is the way to go for us.

LOL, i have 13 years of tape in the room i sit in. We are actually moving from tapes to compression, dedupping on to 100TB of SSDs via cohesity, and the data is stored in quadruplicate. Entire vcenters backed up in hours, instead of days. Freaking sweet. ... . So far we have backed up petabytes of data (with dedup to terabytes of storage, math doesn't work, but it works lol). Who want's full backups every week when you can snapshot using Cohesity daily. i've gone off topic... lol sorry. We have like 6 spectra logic 250s, and a hand full of of 50s. the agency i work with takes backups very seriously, but somehow they are good with going to this ssd solution. i like it, i just wouldn't bet my career on it.
