A VPN will also hide your IP address on the torrent network. Anyway, there are very few countries that can fine you based only on your IP traffic. As far as I know, only Germany do it.
I totally support the idea of using Torrent. I'm one of those who have a laptop with uTorrent and eMule running 24/7 for years.
Torrent works great for movies, games and software. And eMule is still the best for downloading Spanish-language movies and other stuff like eBooks and eComics.
I would compromise to keep all the material from those infamous vendors like 3duk or romfx always shared.
