@gaver If what you are trying to accomplish is just quickly verify if you have an asset or not, as the need arises, you can try Listary. I use it, its perfect. Simply start typing and it will show you all files on your system that match what you type, instantly.
Its a free download, try it, you won't know how you lived without it.

But if you are needing to check the status of many files at once to compare all at once for a broad overview of what you have/don't, then yeah you probably need the software we are talking about also.

I was hoping to make an excel out of the " search"

I used the Hair folder in example
But I would like to write " top level down". So script should recognise if item is for genesis X, if it is a piece of clothing, pose, prop, etc
    This is gathered from foldernames

folders have subdivisions again to, ( hair has, short, long, halflong, curly, etc in it)
Been at it for a while, lot of trial and error, reading technet etc

Just to give an idea of what my plan was

I see, but that goes back to what I stated earlier, that would work if everyone used the same filenames. You might download for example Girl_A_for_G8.zip from website xyz, but website abc has the same asset except named GirlAForG8.rar. If we create a standard lookup table for all of us to share to use, it would be tough to do it automatically, unless using a partial lookup key with wildcards, which would bring up more than even both of those variations of names including files that are not that product at all.
It can be done, it just wouldnt be 100% accurate in a lot of files, those would have to be manually corrected

Just had thought regarding that issue with the filenames. I recall a few years ago I wrote a small software to spin common variations of mis-spellings and website name variations. Similar would probably work here. For example I could programmatically spin
Girl_A_for_G8.zip into each "common" variation a person might use to name the file such as Girl_A_for_G8.rar, GirlAforG8.zip, GirlAforG8.rar, 'Girl A for G8.zip', 'Girl A for G8.rar', etc.. then the program would loop through each variation until it gets a hit against the shared master database

did something like that for MP3 files. I got it as far that it scrapped all the unwanted underscores etc,.
    End result was :
    Artist, album, songtitle, tracknumber.
Also got it to write it to excel, tabs a/Z worked as long as I started with toplevel of artist.
    So I got a standard names >
Maybey ( in a joint venture with zome folks here, we could create a script that would do similair things, that would solve at least one prob.
