The kid next door was out front kicking a ball around and he says to me
"In just a few weeks, it will be the year 2020".
"Does that mean we will start calling it the 20's"
I didn't know what to say.
It hit me like a train wreck.
Wow The year 2020, its just about here.
Yeah, the "Roaring 20's" are back again! Hopefully without the Wall Street Crash of '29 or Prohibition... Maybe some positive new music trends will happen or clothing or something cool. Who knows?
From early on in school the year 2020 was a time period that seemed almost unreachable to me growing up in the 1970's.
So what is my future now? What year represents my future?
Except for flying cars and the "beam me up scottie", a lot of things that we talked about in the 80 and 90's that were considered to be futuristic have pretty much become the norm.
I feel like there is no more of that "looking to the future thing".
Do you know what i mean? Its like I have caught up to to that future and there's nothing to see or even dream about now? Its all been made possible.What is the future for the young generation, Do they have that kind of hope for the future that we had growing up?
The neighbors kid said he didn't know what i was talking about when i asked him what his thought the future would look like in 30 years. He didn't seem to have an imagination.In 1990, I was 20 and the year 2020 was a lifetime away.
So It wasn't strange to think in 30 more years there might be some kind of flying cars by then.Well, I was born in the 1950s.
Then the year 2000 was light years away.Whilst in the twentieth century the rate of technological change boomed, largely down to two world wars, that pace of rate of change has apparently slowed.
There are still major developments, but perhaps not as dramatic and noticeable.My grandfather probably saw the most dramatic change over his lifetime.
When he was born in 1897 there were only horse & carts & the odd bicycle.
Heavier than air aircraft were developed & even broke the speed of sound.
Man walked on the moon.
He died in the mid 1980s.That was a lot more dramatic technological change than there had been in a millenium before.

He died in the mid 1980s.My great-grandmother was born in 1899 and died in 2001. It boggles my mind thinking that she lived in three centuries, two millennia, and watched the world go from horse and buggy to Y2K!
