Hi. I noticed in the Mega thread many of you talk about using a VPN. I never connect to the internet over a public wifi. Period. If I never, ever use my phone to connect to the internet and only use my computer to connect to the internet, should I use a VPN?

are you visiting shady sites? are you surfing with no protection? Are you stealing software and scared you're gonna caught? are you using torrents? are you hacking sites? Then use a VPN. But a vpn is only as good as their lack of logging, don't do shady shit, and don't worry about it. if you are downloading from https sites, data is already encrypted. if you're worried about your ISP sniffing your data, then use a VPN. I've been doing shady shit for years, and never worried about it. I think i got a generic letter once from my ISP about a movie torrent i downloaded, pre netflix streaming. But if you are doing something you don't want your ISP sharing with the world, or punishing you for it, use a VPN. And make sure it's a real VPN, and not some bulls hit fake one. read reviews on the web.

It also depends a bit where in the world you're located. Here, for example (Norway) the major ISP in the country went to supreme court (and won) when they were told to hand over customer data because of suspicion of torrenting / file-sharing. So...

I've been doing shady shit for years as well, a lot of it, and never bothered with VPN - it just hasn't been worth it, with the extra lag and other issues. Granted, nowadays, that is a lesser issue due to greater bandwidth all over.

But, in general, a VPN is good to have if you want access to stuff that is locked behind geo-fences, or you want to have an extra "get out of jail" (or not even get under suspicion) card.

A VPN is never really needed unless you're doing some really shady shit. If you're worried about being traced, find a good VPN and can afford it, then go for it and get a little extra security.

Personally I don't trust routing my connection through someone else's connection but I'm a jaded SOB.

If you want to get around "geo-fences" then there is always TOR browser or the extensions. It just routes your browser connection through the TOR network with various geographical connections and is free.

    Not really EM.
VPN providers however good or bad, logging or non logging, will hand your ass on a plate to the authorities if you are involved in crime when using their service, and rightly so.

Now all of you non VPN users know, that your ISP knows, that you like playing with dolls 😀

You might find one useful if you are in a country that blocks access to certain types of sites (or trying to access sites in a different country that restricts foreign access) - not neccessarily ilegal or 'shady shit'. In that case you can use the vpn to show your location as different country, and usually gain access to those sites. Some sites detect a vpn and still block you, but generally you can get better access when you do find a problem.
