This is a simple comparison between Victoria 8 HD and Genesis 8.1 with applied Victoria 8 HD morphs and the "new and improved" skin.

Also, both have the same expression made for Victoria 8!

Can you guess which is which? And which one looks better (for you)?

I am guessing right is 8.1. It looks much better.

The eyes, too. The one on the left has very dead eyes. Definitely huge improvements overall. I like it.

?? other than the darker skin I don't really seen anything improved?? It doesn't look like anything you couldn't do with materials...

Personally they should be working on making G8 more efficient when people have more than one figure product installed. I hate the loading times.

Victoria 8 navel looks better than 8.1 😀

They say 8.1 is much better but I can't really tell the difference even when using the figures

Hm... my feeling is that 8.1 has (a bit) better skin/eye shaders - shaders for G8 figures (eyes especially) were definitely improved over the last year or so. for example, I often find it really difficult to get decent catchlights in eyes on older G8 figures. Do note, however, that this comparison is not entirely fair as lightning is not identical on both figures.

My problem with Genesis 8 is loading time for importing the model into the program. It's more of a Morph issue than a Render issue.

I've notice Genesis 8 clothes are bundled with a lot of characters and it's the worst thing because every model you add to your library slows down the use of the figure with in the program.

Instead of making 8.1 it would have been better to create a version 9 with the efficiency of Genesis 3.

I'm at the point that every character they make I don't even bother looking at them anymore. Which is why I find Genesis 8.1 pointless.

As for Iray. I have yet to see a render engine that's as easy to use and capable of rendering even the crappiest of model and still make it look realistic. That's the one thing I give Daz over any other 3D program out there.

Daz Studio is like a Sims game that can make near realistic images without banging a nail in your brain to produce photo realistic results. Every time I submit a render to Getty images they keep asking me for a model release and I keep having to tell them "Yo, this isn't a real person!" and that's using Genesis 3.

The program camera interface and animation ability on the other hand is as bad as burning hemorrhoid.

I'll be honest if another render engine out there comes out with the same ease of use and is able to be use on more than just Nvidia cards I would be quick to start using it over Iray any day though.

    @littlepleasures
I wasn't talking about the clothes I was talking about the character morphs. A prime example of this is:
Shirley Lee Character with Hair for Genesis 8 and 8.1 Female
    Or these:
    Haman Karn For G8F

Which is annoying because you want the clothes but you have to install the character to get it, because they know people don't want to buy the characters because of how laggy it makes your PC. And I know you can go in to your morphs folder to remove the morphs but it's really annoying.

As for the Iray yeah it maybe basic but to produce the results you need in 1/10 the time it takes to do something similar in another render engine or program is what makes it better in my opinion. The last I remember people who pay you don't care about the engine you use but the time it takes you to get the the final result.

If any other render engine or program out there can produce the ease and speed of Daz I would be using it in a heartbeat. Granted Daz animation and Dforce is a whole other problem itself. But for me it's all about putting down an environment, a prop, a character, and a render setting and I'm done.
    Jessica

Get me to that in any other program in the same amount of time and I'll never look at Daz Studio again.

... I need to stop complaining and just do that damn Donut Tutorial in blender already...

Speaking of blender you guys have any beginner tutorials channels on YouTube you can recommend? I'm really starting from Scratch.

Every single thing you used on Victoria 8.1 can be applied to the old 8 though. You can apply the new skin shader to 8. You can use the new eyes on 8 by saving the UV map. The new lashes can be used on 8 with a simple ID edit, then save as a prop. The face rig might be different, and that might be better...but it could simply be that the particular expression used works better in this specific situation.

It only takes a few minutes to get all of the stuff for 8.1 to work on 8. The only exception are skins that use the new neck UV, but even that can worked around if you bake the skin using the texture bake feature in Daz. This is more involved, but totally possible. Since 8.1 can use the 8 UVs, it just takes a few steps to do.
So that begs a question, why? These things are so easy to do, why didn't Daz just do that? Why not give users the new lash prop for 8 as well?

Daz could have done all of this for you. It would not have been hard, it would not have taken hardly any time. But they didn't. They chose not to in order to make 8.1 look more special, and to make people upgrade. Of course upgrading means buying all new products to support their new 8.1. It is pure deception on their part, and pretty disgusting if you ask me. 8.1 is not even worthy of being a 0.1 upgrade. They didn't upgrade anything, they just changed the UV and face rig and called it a day. This after so many years of Genesis 8. And if that is not bad enough, even the face rig is based on a product you can buy for 8. This is seriously pathetic. They have all these people in Utah and this is all they could do, is bolt on new products created by other people?
Dforce is not Daz's creation, either. They bought that. It just shows that Daz is not capable of building anything themselves. They may be a small company, but companies much smaller than Daz have built innovative software in house. That is not an excuse. What has Daz created in house in the past 20 years?

And we are supposed to believe they will eventually ship a Daz Studio 5?
    HA!
They will not ever get to 5 because they literally cannot develop the code to build a 5. They are just going to keep iterating on 4 until their company dies a slow and painful death at the hands of upstarts. products like Unreal's new Metahuman will spell the end of Daz in time. Daz cannot compete with that. They are not capable of making something that can come close, because they are not capable of building anything on their own. They would have to buy it, but Epic can beat them at that game and snatch up these companies before Daz.

Unfortunately, DAZ is a company being carried by two programmers (really one), and that is Rob. I've been using DAZ for a few years, but looking back at older youtube videos and forums, it is easy to see that the business side of DAZ is an absolute wreck. So many years put into DAZ and still not a single MAJOR patch. I say about 20 employees at DAZ actually do work and the other 480 idk what the hell they're doing.

I was able to easily differ Victoria 8 vs 8.1. The shader for base Genesis 8 characters make their skin seem dull & dry. The eyes would always be a dead giveaway of it being CG instead of RL. Victoria 8.1 looks (imo) slightly better.

All DAZ really needs is to fire 200 employees and hire programmers so their product is better. But instead they decided to make bridges to other apps because they know their software is trash. Hell, make DAZ open-source lol.

And while there are strong contenders to “character creation tools” (reallusion’s Character Creator 3, and Digital Humans by Epic, to name those I am aware of), they are not fully fledged right now.

Add Human Generator( https://www.humgen3d.com/ ) to the list. That is just at the beginning of the road but has lots of potential.

Well, that's your opinion, but I think it's completely exaggerated.
Daz3D has a very clear target group whose needs are covered by 98%. There are enough people out there who just want to be creative as a hobby after work, and that will remain the case for a long time. People who have scruples to get any pirate copies on the Internet and do not have or want to raise the financial means to acquire professional software that quickly goes into the xxxx $. Whereby they then have nothing but the software and first have to painstakingly train all the skills over years to realize in the end that they simply lack the talent. I don't see a competitor for this main target group.

The people who complain are a very small minority who, like everywhere else, are simply very loud. Complaining is easier than delivering results in other software, because if someone can deliver results, he would have switched long ago and would not complain about a software that in fact does all the work for him.

Whoever wants to create photorealistic images or even animations, professionally anyway, is completely wrong with Daz3D - that's the way it's always been.
